Enjoy the best beers and bites at some of Columbus' best patios

Columbus is home to a wide variety of bars and breweries, each with its own unique atmosphere and outdoor spaces, and many of which allow pets. From the two-story patio with fire pits at the soon-too-open Jackie O's On Fourth to the wooded oasis at Understory, there are plenty of options for those who love to enjoy a drink in the fresh air.

Land-Grant Brewing, Pins Mechanical Co., and Seventh Son Brewing Co. are local favorites with expansive outdoor seating areas, while DogTap at Brewdog offers a large patio and all-you-can-eat wings on Wednesdays. For those who prefer spirits, High Bank Distillery and Columbus Brewing Company offer great patio options as well.

As the weather warms up, here are a few local patios in Columbus, just in time for patio season.

When Jackie O's On Fourth debuts next month at 171 N. 4th St., it will surely be in the running for the best patio in town. The taproom will feature an ambitious, two-story patio complete with a bar on each floor, two fire pits, and a view of downtown Columbus. The outdoor space is also accentuated with a variety of plants, vines and trees, and available starting April 21, a food cart by Athens-based Bagel Street Deli.

The patio at Understory, 2571 Neil Ave. in the University District, is tucked in the back of the building but has a great atmosphere for those who like the outdoors. Nestled on the edges of a wooded area, there are trees all around you while you enjoy drinks with family and friends. Its large menu features soups, salads, sandwiches and a good number of shareable options, such as crispy shrimp and grilled shishito peppers. With plenty of tables and space for standing, it makes Understory a good option for a summer evening on a patio.

Getaway Brewing

Travel-themed brewery Getaway Brewing's patio is an ideal spot to enjoy a drink at 108 N High St. in Dublin. With a brick patio that adds 1,000 square feet to the taproom and cocktail bar, you can sit outside under large umbrellas while being surrounded by lush greenery. The menu features drafts, cocktails and wine, plus European-influenced beer styles and a charcuterie vending machine. Additionally, the greenhouse offers more seating options, making it an excellent way to soak up the sun.

A Columbus favorite, Land-Grant Brewing, 424 W. Town St. in Franklinton, is known for its good beer and outdoor seating. Check out the beer garden, which is a 9,000-square-foot patio, or attend daily events such as trivia, bingo, live music and more through spring into summer. You will find Ray Ray's Hog Pit food truck there as well.

Another brewery makes the list, and it's another Columbus favorite. Seventh Son Brewing, 1101 N. 4th St. in Italian Village, has a good beer selection with a cozy patio and a nice rooftop bar as well. It has a food truck schedule on its website, so you can plan your trip with the food of your choice, too.

Pins Mechanical Co.

Pins, located Downtown on 141 N. 4th St. as well as at Easton and Dublin, offers an entertaining outdoor experience with fire pits, games, and a pleasant patio atmosphere. With duck-pin bowling indoors and games like Jenga, patio pong, and table tennis outside, it's no wonder why Pins is so popular. Spending time with friends and family in this lively environment is a great idea, and although there's no kitchen, the Downtown location has food trucks on-site.

One of the newer patios on the list, East Side mainstay The Top Steak House, 2891 E. Main St., expanded its patio two years ago to about four times the size of the old patio. A rectangular bar, fountain, and planters add to the lively space fit for three seasons, while a fence separates the well-dressed customers enjoying cocktails, appetizers, charbroiled steaks and more from the parking lot.

DogTap

Brewdog's DogTap, located at 96 Gender Road in Canal Winchester, has an abundance of patio space with fire pits and quality beer. On Wednesdays, they offer all-you-can-eat wings, which can be paired with a drink for a satisfying dining and drinking experience in the open air. For those who want to enjoy a clear night under the stars, Brewdog offers plenty of outdoor seating options.

When Columbus Brewing Company's newest patio opens at 200 Kelton Ave. in Franklin Park later this year, it will be a good place to chill out around a fire pit with one of 24 drafts on tap, all-natural, biodynamic wines or cocktails with spirits from Watershed Distillery and Echo Spirits. Columbus Brewing also has a large patio in the back of its 2555 Harrison Road taproom, where you can take a brewery tour and then sit in the back with friends.

Somewhere in Particular Brewery

SIP, short for Somewhere in Particular Brewery, provides a delightful outdoor experience for visitors to enjoy. This brewery, located at 5055 Dierker Road on the Northwest Side, serves on-tap beer, cocktails, and wine, ensuring that everyone can find something to their liking. With picnic-style seating, there is enough room to accommodate groups of friends. In addition, SIP offers plenty of dining options, including sandwiches, pizza, and entrees. Life-sized beer pong and other games are also available outdoors.

The award-winning High Bank Distillery's 1051 Goodale Blvd. location near Grandview also has a good patio atmosphere in front. With garage doors that open, it makes for an open-air atmosphere even inside, but the outside patio has tables for those who want to stand or sit. Along with the distillery's second location in Gahanna, High Bank also features a varied menu and a happy hour with half-off cocktails.
