SOUTH BEND — The Mark Feldman/Paul Hecht Quartet performs at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 3 at Merrimans’ Playhouse, 401 E. Colfax Ave., Suite 135.

A Grammy Award-winning jazz violinist with more than 200 recording credits with artists such as Michael Brecker, Muhal Richard Abrams, John Zorn, Chris Potter, Billy Hart and more, Feldman also was a member of the John Abercrombie Quartet for more than a decade.

The concert features music from Feldman’s 2005 album, “What Exit.”

Covering a wide territory of emotional and harmonic soundscapes, the compositions on “What Exit” range from haunting lyricism and delicacy to hard-charging grooves, music that is alternately fierce and probing and also not above cracking a joke or two.

Hecht is an emerging pianist in the Chicago jazz scene who has recently moved into music after a career teaching poetry. His Pyrography Trio, with bassist Ben Dillinger and drummer Gustavo Cortiñas, performs his original compositions at Merrimans’ on Dec. 1.

Hecht’s book about English poetry at the end of the 16th century, “What Rosalind Likes,” has just been published by Oxford University Press.

Nov. 3's quartet also includes Chicago-based musicians Ethan Philion on bass and Quin Kirchner on drums.

Tickets are $10-$5.
