ENMU blanks TWU in women's soccer, 1-0

Sep. 24—DENTON, Texas — So far this season, it continues to be a first-goal-wins situation for the Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team.

Junior midfielder Emma Hafenback, who transferred to ENMU this year from Division I Jacksonville State, tallied her first goal as a Greyhound in the 75th minute on Wednesday and it was enough for a 1-0 Lone Star Conference victory over Texas Woman's.

ENMU (3-5, 1-2 LSC) has three shutout wins this season, all by 1-0 or 2-0 scores, and five shutout losses in the same category except for 3-0 setbacks last week to Midwestern State and St. Edward's.

Hafenback, a Canadian from Winnipeg, stepped in front of a pass as the Pioneers (1-5-2, 1-1-1) were trying to clear the ball and beat senior goalkeeper Morgan Sherman to break the deadlock.

In the remaining time, TWU put three shots on goal, but ENMU junior keeper Samantha Jeffries was equal to the task. Overall, both netminders finished the contest with five saves.

It snapped a five-match winless streak for ENMU against the Pioneers, dating to a 2-0 win on Sept. 24. 2017 at Greyhound Stadium.

The Hounds were slated to host 25th-ranked Angelo State on Saturday at Greyhound Stadium. Their next outing comes this Saturday, also at home, against St. Mary's.

Volleyball — That fast start for the ENMU volleyball team has faded a bit with the beginning of Lone Star Conference play.

On Friday night at Tyler, Texas, the Greyhounds fell to 0-3 in the LSC with a 25-15, 25-12, 25-14 setback to Texas-Tyler. ENMU (9-6 overall) had another league tilt on tap Saturday at Dallas Baptist.

Senior outside hitter Mikayla Ware collected 13 kills for the Patriots (8-5, 2-1), while sophomore middle blocker Dakota Rogers-Hurtado had six kills, three total blocks (one solo) and six digs. Senior defensive specialist Savannah Guzman compiled 12 digs and a match-high three aces.

Tyler was in control all the way, stretching a six-point lead to 15-6 with a 9-2 blitz in Game 1.

ENMU mounted a mini-run early in the second, getting a kill and a block from senior middle blocker Gracelyn Stubbs and a block from senior middle blocker Adriana Puni to close an early 6-1 deficit to two points. But it didn't last as the Patriots ran away with a 13-3 surge en route to a 2-0 game lead.

Leading 17-10, Tyler put the third set out of reach with a 6-0 run.

This week, the Hounds are home for league contests against Texas Woman's on Wednesday, St. Mary's on Friday and St. Edward's on Saturday.

Cross country — Sophomore Marta Pascoa posted a five-kilometer time of 19 minutes, 25.7 seconds to take individual honors and lead Eastern New Mexico University's women past host New Mexico Highlands in NMHU's Cross Country Jam on Friday in Las Vegas, N.M. The Greyhounds finished with 26 team points to 29 for the Cowgirls.
