ENMU duo waiting to see if they qualify for D-II nationals

May 9—LUBBOCK — Eastern New Mexico University freshman Alex Williams in javelin and junior Timothy Frederick in the 400 are waiting to see if they will qualify for the NCAA Division II national outdoor track championships in late May at Pueblo, Colo.

Williams finished third in men's javelin competition with a throw of 211 feet, 7 inches at the three-day Lone Star Conference championships hosted by Lubbock Christian. He is currently ranked 10th in Division II, so he stands a good chance of making it to the nationals as the top 16 in an event qualify.

Frederick was fifth in the men's 400 in 47.17 seconds over the weekend. He is currently 17th, so he needs to either move up a notch or two or he could earn a berth if someone seeded higher than him drops out.

The national meet is slated for Colorado State-Pueblo from May 25-27.

Frederick currently has a top 400 time of 46.04 in an early meet at West Texas A&M, while Williams' best throw this season was 213-8 and came in a season-opening meet hosted by the University of Arizona. Both are expected to compete in Sunday's Last Chance Meet at WT, trying to improve their personal bests, before final selections are released early next week.

WT continues to dominate LSC track, sweeping both team titles for the third year in a row. The Buffaloes posted 220 points to 157 for runnerup Angelo State on the men's side while the Lady Buffs, who've won five consecutive LSC titles, finished with 280 1/2 points to 197 for ASU.

Helping Angelo State's women in pole vault were Clovis High grad Camryn Barros, second at 11-10 1/2 , and Portales High alum Kylyie Paden, fourth at 11-4 1/2 .

ENMU's women finished eighth with 26 points while the men were 10th with 13 in the 12-team competition.

Frederick added a seventh-place finish in the 200 in 20.99 and ran anchor on the Greyhounds' 1,600 relay team, which was eighth in 3 minutes, 22.92 seconds and also included freshman John Magee, sophomore Luis Holguin and senior Devis Cheruiyot.

For the women, junior Tamia Smith and freshman Kennedy Ulmer finished 2-7 in shot put at 44-11 3/4 and 41-11 1/4 , respectively. Smith also claimed fourth place in hammer (153-8) while Ulmer was fifth in discus (138-4).

On the track, freshman Mahault Lebrun finished sixth in the 400 hurdles in 1:03.44 while the 400 relay team of sophomores Malia Sanchez and Kiara Cox and freshmen Meghan Rodriguez and Ashlynn Evans earned sixth place at 49.48 and the 1,600 relay quartet of Rodriguez, senior Kaylyn De La Rosa, junior Savannah Romero and Lebrun took eighth place at 4:05.60.
