ENMU men score late to tie Southwest Baptist

Sep. 6—BOLIVAR, Mo. — Eastern New Mexico University used an own goal in the 79th minute to pull out a 1-1 tie against Southwest Baptist in men's soccer action on Monday.

There was no scoring in the match until Jonathan Prudencio found the back of the net for the Bearcats in the 74th minute.

Several minutes later, a Bearcats defender tried to clear the ball out of his zone, but his header attempt deflected into his own net.

Both teams had chances in the remaining time, but neither was able to tally.

ENMU (1-2-1) posted a 10-7 advantage over Southwest Baptist (0-3-1) in shots on goal. Freshman Paul Waschkau made six stops in goal for the Greyhounds.

On Saturday, ENMU did all its damage in the second half to blank Missouri S&T 4-0 at Rolla, Mo.

Junior forward Jaime Olivabroke the scoring ice at the 48:12 mark, pumping in a ricochet off Miners goalkeeper Davis Joseph. Oliva then assisted on freshman foward Alexandre Meres' goal about 3 1/2 minutes later.

Meres got a helper of his own in the 73rd minute, setting up freshman Ben Sauerlaunder, before freshman midfielder Jo Martinetz finished it off, beating Joseph for his first collegiate goal in the closing moments.

The Hounds will be on the road again later this week, facing South Dakota School of Mines on Sunday in Rapid City and Adams State on Tuesday at Alamosa, Colo.

ENMU women 2, New Mexico Highlands 0 (Sunday) — At Las Vegas, N.M., the Greyhounds, who had split a pair of 1-0 decisions to start the season, this time added an insurance goal to hold off the Cowgirls (0-3).

Junior forward/midfielder Kelsey Medina put ENMU in front in the 34th minute, taking a long pass from senior midfielder Hannah Grady and beating Highlands keeper Isabella Ortiz to the lower left corner from just inside the box.

The insurance tally came from freshman forward Abby Ditzler, who slid her shot under the charging Ortiz in the 83rd minute.

Freshman goalkeeper Samantha Jeffries earned the shutout for ENMU with seven saves.

The Hounds play their fourth Rocky Mountain Athletic Confernce team of the season on Thursday, taking on Fort Lewis in a 6 p.m. start at Durango, Colo.
