ENMU opts to not retain De los Reyes

Apr. 22—PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University has announced that it will not retain women's basketball coach Meghan De los Reyes for the 2023-24 school year.

In a release on the university's web site, athletic director Paul Weir said the school is looking to go in a different direction.

"After review of the women's basketball program, we have decided upon a change in leadership," Weir said in the release. "We look very much forward to a new chapter of Greyhound women's basketball."

Martin Pazanin, De los Reyes' lead assistant last season, was selected to serve as interim coach. The university is conducting a search process for the next head coach, and the release said the athletic department will have no further comment until the search is completed.

Attempts to reach De los Reyes for comment were unsuccessful.

De los Reyes was hired in July 2021 to her first head coaching position after 11 years as a college women's assistant coach. The Greyhounds went 22-29 in her two seasons, including 15-23 in the Lone Star Conference.

She came to ENMU after 11 years as an women's college assistant, the previous two at Division II Cal State-Chico. At ENMU, De los Reyes coached five players who earned All-LSC recognition at some level, including junior forward Deja Adrian, who was a first-team choice in 2022-23 and the conference's newcomer of the year.

The Greyhounds were 10-14 (6-10 LSC) in 2022-23 and came up just short of making the league's postseason tournament. They did qualify for the LSC tourney in De los Reyes' first campaign, losing 88-85 at Cameron in the opening round.

De los Reyes was the ninth head coach in the 49-year history of the program.
