ENMU releases women's basketball schedule

Oct. 8—PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University released its 2022-23 women's basketball schedule on Thursday, including 22 Lone Star Conference games and five non-league tilts.

"We're excited to announce our schedule for this season," second-year coach Meghan De los Reyes said in a release from the school. "We have assembled a strong non-conference schedule (which) includes our (RMAC/LSC) Challenge, followed by two home (NCAA) Division II contests."

De los Reyes has made significant changes to the squad, including the hiring of assistant coach Martin Pazanin. In addition, only four players are back, led by sophomore guard Bella Stone, who started 18 games last season and led the team in assists per game and steals per game.

Others returning are senior guard Julia Chavez, senior post Alexis Johnson and senior forward Stacey Ajobiewe. Of the newcomers, four are freshmen and five are transfers.

Eastern opens the season on Nov. 11-12, taking on Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference members Fort Lewis and host New Mexico Highlands in the challenge at Las Vegas, N.M. They return home for matchups against Eckerd (Fla.) on Nov. 23 and Western Colorado on Nov. 26.

The only other non-conference tilt will be played on Dec. 10 against Northern New Mexico at The Rock in Clovis.

ENMU's conference slate begins on Dec. 1 at St. Edward's in Austin, Texas and Dec. 3 at St. Mary's in San Antonio.

"The Lone Star Conference is one of the toughest leagues in Division II women's basketball," De los Reyes said. "The national champion has come from the LSC three out of the last six years. Every night is a battle in our conference."

De los Reyes' squad finished 10-14 during the 2021-22 campaign, including 6-10 in the LSC. The Hounds were able to earn a berth in the LSC postseason tournament, where their season came to an end with an 88-85 setback at Cameron in the opening round.

The LSC is split into two eight-team divisions. The Hounds will play the other seven teams in the West twice each and the squads on the East side once apiece
