Enquirer names Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, Oct. 7

In a vote that ended Oct. 7, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week, presented by Mercy Health, from high school sports action through Oct. 2.

Winners will receive certificates by the end of the sports season.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs each week during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports.

Please note: We pulled a couple of ballots with voting issues. A winner may be declared later if those issues are resolved. The rest of the winners are:

Ohio football team of the week: Blanchester – Blanchester has won four-straight, five of its last six after beating Williamsburg 50-32.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football team of the week: Walton-Verona – The Bearcats went on the road to Carroll County and edged the Panthers by two points in a 28-26 victory.

Ohio fall boys team of the week: Anderson soccer – The Raptors improved to 11-1-1 overall record after sweeping Colerain 3-0 and Walnut Hills 5-0 on the road.

Ohio fall girls team of the week: Waynesville soccer – Waynesville extended its flawless season to a 12-0 mark after shutting out Cincinnati Country Day 1-0 and Bellbrook 4-0.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana fall boys team of the week: Dixie Heights soccer – The Colonels ended their regular season by shutting out Conner 3-0 before a 2-1 win against Newport Central Catholic.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana fall girls team of the week: Notre Dame soccer – The Pandas concluded their regular season with a 2-1 victory over Mercy McAuley to improve to 13-3-2 overall.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys cross country runner of the week: Wyatt Sunday, Holy Cross - He finished fifth out of 315 runners in the Varsity B race at the Centerville (Ohio) Saturday night meet.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls cross country runner of the week: Scarlett Erney, Dixie Heights – The senior finished 25th out of 246 runners in the Varsity B race at the Centerville (Ohio) Saturday night meet, helping the Colonels finish fourth as a team.

Ohio boys cross country runner of the week: Liam Morris, Indian Hill – The senior won the Goshen Invitational Sept. 26 with a time of 16:33.00, helping Indian Hill to a first-place team win. He also won the Division II/III division at the St. Xavier Invitational Oct. 1, helping Indian Hill to another title.

Ohio girls cross country runner of the week: Lauren Mang, Lakota West – The senior won the Lakota West-Sycamore dual at the Kings Duals meet Oct. 1 with a time of 19:42.80, to lead Lakota West to a team title.

Field hockey player of the week: Harper Hodgett, Ursuline Academy – The sophomore helped lead the team to a strong victory in the recent game against Talawanda with 2 goals and an assist to goal.

Ohio big school football player of the week: Braden Sullivan, Edgewood – Sullivan totaled 154 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns on just eight touches in Edgewood’s 48-12 win over Northwest.

Ohio small school football player of the week: Jace Canter, Williamsburg – Canter had seven catches for 123 yards and three touchdowns along with a rushing score in Williamsburg’s 50-32 loss to Blanchester. He also added a fumble recovery on defense.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football player of the week: Lincoln Mann, Walton-Verona – He was a perfect 4-for-4 in PATs which made the difference in the Bearcats’ 28-26 district win over Carroll County.

Ohio boys golfer of the week: Cayse Morgan, Elder – Morgan was named the GCL South Golfer of the Year before a runner-up finish in the Archbishop Hoban Invitational.

Ohio girls golfer of the week: Charlotte Soller, Mariemont – Soller finished in third at the City of Mason sectional on Sept. 27 after shooting an 86. Soller was the high-finisher for Mariemont who qualified as a team for the district tournament.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys golfer of the week: Caleb Eaglin, Newport Central Catholic – He shot a 75 in the semi-state tournament in Shepherdsville, qualifying for this week’s state finals in Bowling Green.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls golfer of the week: Reagan Ramage, Cooper – She shot a 73 in in the semi-state tournament in Shepherdsville, helping the Jaguars win the tournament to qualify for this week’s state finals in Bowling Green.

Ohio boys big school soccer player of the week: Landon Goethe, Anderson – In addition to kicking for the football team, the junior recorded 1.5 saves for the soccer team, making six saves in the process.

Ohio boys small school soccer player of the week: Connor Wilkes, Indian Hill – He scored two goals in a win over Finneytown, then recorded a goal and an assist in a 2-0 win over Summit Country Day.

Ohio girls big school soccer player of the week: Lucy Sabota, Middletown Madison – She scored two goals and had two assists in a 9-1 league win over Carlisle.

Ohio girls small school soccer player of the week: Alyssa Fleming, Taylor – She scored both goals in a 2-0 league win over Reading.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys soccer player of the week: Matthew Resing, St. Henry – He had eight goals in three games, two of them wins, last week to boost his season total to 19. That included four goals against Boone County.

Girls singles tennis player of the week: Leanna Gandy, Edgewood – She finished second overall in first singles in the SWOC tournament.

Girls doubles tennis players of the week: Gracie King & Lauren Springer, Ross – They won the Southwest Ohio Conference first doubles tournament.

Ohio small school volleyball player of the week: Grace Louden, Deer Park – The freshman had 14 assists and eight digs against Northwest Sept. 26.

Northern Kentucky volleyball player of the week: Sadie Smith, Cooper – The junior recorded her 2,000th career assist Sept. 29 in a win over Beechwood and led the Jaguars to a 4-1 record in a tournament in Louisville.

Water polo player of the week: Jack McDaniel, Princeton – The senior goalkeeper gave an impressive performance recording 14 blocked shots and 4 steals in Princeton's win over Sycamore last week.
