Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, April 14

In a vote that ended April 14, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week from high school sports action through April 9.

Winter winners and spring winners through April 7 will receive certificates within the week, depending on mail delivery, through the athletic departments.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Here are this week's winners.

Ohio baseball team of the week: West Clermont – The Wolves have now won five games in a row after topping Walnut Hills twice, Campbell County and Beechwood.

Northern Kentucky baseball team of the week: Beechwood – Beechwood won the Ninth Region All “A” Classic with a 10-4, comeback win over St. Henry.

Ohio softball team of the week: Fairfield – Fairfield improved to 5-0 in the GMC with wins over Sycamore, Mason, Lakota East and Hamilton.

Northern Kentucky softball team of the week: Simon Kenton – The Lady Pioneers have been winners of four-straight after beating Walton-Verona 15-0 in three innings on April 7.

Boys spring team of the week: Goshen tennis – Goshen is 5-0 after beating Batavia 4-1 on April 3 and Clinton-Massie 5-0 on April 6.

Girls spring team of the week: Talawanda track – At the Division I Coaches Classic at Ross, Talawanda claimed first place with 148 team points.

Ohio big-school baseball player of the week: Colin McGuire, Sycamore - The junior went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs in Sycamore’s 5-2 win over Taylor April 8.

Ohio small-school baseball player of the week: Timmy Nagel, Cincinnati Christian - The junior went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs in Cincinnati Christian’s 11-3 win over New Richmond April 6.

Northern Kentucky baseball player of the week: Cody Henson, Conner – In a four-win week, he went 7-for-11 at the plate with six RBIs and three doubles.

Ohio big-school softball player of the week: McKenna Weekley, Talawanda – The junior had a big week in the circle in three Talawanda wins. On April 3, she pitched a perfect game against Northwest with 12 strikeouts. On April 7, she pitched two shutout winnings and had four hits and two RBIs in a key SWOC win over Ross.

Ohio small-school softball player of the week: Lauren Diels, Wilmington – The freshman allowed one run on four hits and struck out 18 in the circle in the Hurricane’s 5-1 win over Williamsburg High School at the Reds Futures Game April 8.

Northern Kentucky softball player of the week: Madison Urlage, Holy Cross – She went 4-for-5 with three RBIs in a win over Ludlow. She also scored four runs and finished a home run shy of a cycle.

Boys lacrosse player of the week: Adam Carville, McNicholas – The senior had 10 goals, one assist, and 13 ground balls in two victories this week, a 9-8 win over Madeira April 3 and a 10-6 win over Archbishop Alter April 4.

Girls lacrosse player of the week: Poppy Wallbank, Lakota East – She had five goals, three assists, two ground balls and one each of caused turnovers and interceptions in the 20-7 win over Oak Hills April 6. She had two more goals and three ground balls in the 13-1 win over Fairfield April 4.

Ohio boys singles tennis player of the week: Ethan Vass, Lakota East – Vass earned three wins, going 6-0, 6-1 against Fairfield, 6-0, 6-1 against Oak Hills and 6-1, 6-2 against Lakota West.

Ohio boys doubles tennis team of the week: Koen Dominguez/Thomas Kennedy, Milford – As Milford topped Elder 3-2 on April 3, Dominguez and Kennedy won 6-1, 6-3 in second doubles to help secure Milford’s win.

Ohio boys track and field athlete of the week: Tyler Schwinn, Loveland – He won the high jump at the Clash of the Titans with a flop of 6 feet, 5 inches.

Ohio girls track and field athlete of the week: Summer Swartwout, Colerain – She won both the 100 meters and 200 meters at Princeton.

Northern Kentucky boys track and field athlete of the week: Preston Winiger, Cooper – At Campbell County, he won the 400 meters with a personal best of 51.91 seconds and took second place in the 200 meters with a personal best of 23.97 seconds.

Northern Kentucky girls track and field athlete of the week: Ellie Greenwell, Notre Dame – She set a school and Diocese of Covington meet record with a 1,600-meter time of 4:58.33.

Boys volleyball player of the week: Tucker Groppe, Sycamore – In a trio of five-set wins for Sycamore, Groppe had 45 assists at Roger Bacon, 52 against Elder and 49 over Walnut Hills.
