Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, Oct. 28

In a vote that ended Oct. 28, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week, presented by Mercy Health, from high school sports action through Oct. 23.

Winners will receive certificates by the end of the sports season.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports.

Please note: We pulled ballots with voting issues. A winner still may be declared if those issues are resolved. The rest of the winners are:

Ohio football team of the week: Edgewood – Edgewood beat Harrison for its ninth-consecutive victory while also securing a solo SWOC championship.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football team of the week: East Central – In the first round of Indiana’s Class 4A tournament, the Trojans advanced after a 53-0 shutout of Edgewood.

Ohio fall boys team of the week: Moeller soccer – The Crusaders began their tournament run by beating Hamilton 9-0 before topping Western Hills 8-0.

Ohio fall girls team of the week: Mount Notre Dame field hockey – Mount Notre Dame earned the region’s top seed and began its postseason after a 10-0 win against Talawanda.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana fall boys team of the week: Conner cross country – Four Conner runners finished in the top 10 as the Cougars won the Class 3A Region 5 meet.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana fall girls team of the week: Covington Latin cross country – Covington Latin qualified for its first state cross country appearance in school history.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys cross country runner of the week: Nathan Ruth, Bishop Brossart – He finished second in the 1A, Region 4 championship and led the Mustangs to third place in the team standings.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls cross country runner of the week: Olivia Holbrook, Campbell County – The sophomore led the Campbell County girls cross country team to a 3A Region 5 Championship and was the individual 3A Region 5 Champion with a time of 19:27.

Ohio boys cross country runner of the week: Evan Trapp, St. Xavier – The junior won the OHSAA district tournament Division I-B race Oct. 22 at Voice of America Park with a time of 15:31.20, helping the Bombers to a team title.

Ohio girls cross country runner of the week: Julia Verhoff, Mercy McAuley – The senior won the OHSAA district tournament Division II-A race Oct. 22 at Voice of America Park with a time of 19:24.7.

Field hockey player of the week: Julia Ward, Ursuline Academy – Throughout the season, the sophomore has had an outstanding total of 18 goals, 7 assists, and 2 defensive saves.

Ohio big school football player of the week: Gage Patrick, St. Xavier – Patrick ran for 130 yards and two touchdowns on 21 attempts in St. Xavier’s 30-16 victory over Life Christian Academy.

Ohio small school football player of the week: Spencer Smith, Western Brown – Smith had four tackles and a 55-yard pick-six in Western Brown’s win over Batavia.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football player of the week: Davis Burleigh, Highlands – He kicked two field goals from 37 and 39 yards, giving him 12 for the season to break Highlands’ single-season record, in the Bluebirds’ 32-5 win over Cooper in 5A district play.

Ohio boys golfer of the week: Charlie Fish, St. Xavier – Fish and teammate Robert Gerwin both shot a 155 to finish in a tie for 11th in the state. Fish’s 79 on the tourney’s first day came as the Bombers shot a 310 to enter round two as runner-up.

Ohio girls golfer of the week: Kylee Heidemann, Mercy McAuley – Heidemann’s 69 round on day two of the Division I tournament gave her a 141 for the weekend and the OHSAA Division I state title.

Ohio boys big school soccer player of the week: Kyle Suter, Turpin – He kept the Spartans’ season alive, netting a golden goal to beat Sycamore in overtime.

Ohio boys small school soccer player of the week: Jackson Hampton, Mariemont – He anchored the Warriors’ defense in each of their two postseason wins, making a total of four saves and recording his fifth and sixth shutouts of the year.

Ohio girls big school soccer player of the week: Katelyn Hunt, Seton – Her hat trick propelled the Saints past Hamilton, and she had two goals in a win over Princeton.

Ohio girls small school soccer player of the week: Aubrey Rack, Clermont Northeastern – The sophomore had one goal and four assists in a win over Felicity-Franklin.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls soccer player of the week: Lauren Gooderson, Bishop Brossart – The senior goalkeeper made four saves in the Mustangs’ 2-0 win over East Carter in the state round of 16, then made nine saves against powerful Lexington Catholic in a 3-0 loss in the state quarterfinals.

Girls singles tennis player of the week: Shyla Aggarwal, Mason – The senior had quite the finish to her high school tennis career, winning her second straight singles state championship, then helping Mason to the OCTA team championship.

Girls doubles tennis players of the week: Maria Poon & Emily Jennewein, St. Ursula – The duo was the lone doubles side from Greater Cincinnati to win a match in the Division I state tournament, doing so in straight sets.

Ohio big school volleyball player of the week: Katie Gielas, Ursuline – Gielas helped the Lions defeat Hamilton in straight sets in the first round of the postseason with six kills and three blocks.

Ohio small school volleyball player of the week: Avery Neth, Williamsburg – The junior had 20 kills and 10 digs in Williamsburg’s straight-set win over Seven Hills.

Northern Kentucky volleyball player of the week: Lilly Hamburg, Conner – She had 13 kills, four blocks, six digs and an ace in the Cougars’ 3-1 win over Cooper in the 33rd District semifinals that clinched Conner’s first trip to the Ninth Region tournament since 2005.
