Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, Jan. 20

In a vote that ended Jan. 20, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week from high school sports action through Jan. 15.

Winners will receive certificates by the end of the sports season.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports.

Ohio boys basketball team of the week: La Salle – The Lancers ended a four-game losing skid with a 69-61 win over Winton Woods before notching a conference victory against Moeller 55-45.

Ohio girls basketball team of the week: Oak Hills – The Highlanders beat Sycamore 44-24 on Jan. 11. for their third-straight conference win.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball team of the week: Holy Cross – Holy Cross topped Heritage Academy, Ludlow and Newport to win the 9th Region All “A” Classic.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball team of the week: Dixie Heights – The Colonels picked up a three-game winning streak after beating East Central, St. Henry and Mason County.

Boys winter team of the week: St. Xavier swimming – The Bombers cruised to 612.5 points and a first-place finish at the Southwest Ohio Swimming & Diving Classic. St. Xavier has won the event in every year of its existence.

Girls winter team of the week: Ross bowling – The Rams beat Edgewood 2136-1749 before handing Harrison its first conference loss to force a tie atop the SWOC standings.

Ohio big-school boys basketball player of the week: Nick Heffron, La Salle – Heffron had a career-high 27 points against Winton Woods before a game-high 23 points to lead La Salle in a win over Moeller.

Ohio small-school boys basketball player of the week: Bailey Temming, Fenwick – While not the high scorer with six points against Kings on Jan. 14, Temming still stuffed the stats with 17 rebounds, four blocks and four assists.

Ohio big-school girls basketball player of the week: Anna Campbell, Oak Hills – Coming off of the bench for Oak Hills on Jan. 11, Anna Campbell led the Highlanders with 16 points while also grabbing five rebounds.

Ohio small-school girls basketball player of the week: Willow Montag, Taylor – The freshman led Taylor to a pair of league wins in three games over the week, combining for 53 points, nine rebounds, 10 assists and 13 steals in the three contests.

Northern Kentucky boys basketball player of the week: Jack Grayson, St. Henry – He totaled 31 points and 16 rebounds in two games at the Ninth Region All “A” Classic.

Northern Kentucky girls basketball player of the week: Ava Coleman, Scott – She registered a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Fleming County.

Ohio boys bowler of the week: Graham Copley, Anderson – He led the Raptors with a 472 series against Turpin. His 247 game is the 13th-highest in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference, and his 247 game is currently the fourth-best.

Ohio girls bowler to the week: Ariana Machuca, Batavia – She rolled a 353 series in a win over Clinton-Massie. She then led the Bulldogs with a 363 series, including a 204 single game in a win over Goshen.

Northern Kentucky boys bowler of the week: Brayden Hall, Dayton – He had games of 253 and 240 against Lloyd, adding up to a 493 series.

Northern Kentucky girls bowler of the week: Sydney Harris, Dayton – She was named to the all-tournament second team and placed second overall at the Dayton Singles Tournament.

Gymnast of the week: Izzy Downs, Lakota East – She won the beam with a score of 9 at the Troy Invitational, as well as taking eighth all-around, 12th in vault and seventh in the floor exercise.

Ohio boys swimmer/diver of the week: Will Abel, Clark Montessori - Will showed flexibility and sportsmanship in the Southwest Ohio Classic swimming and diving meet (Mason site) by filling in for sick teammates in multiple relays. Will had PR swims in both the 50 fly and 100 free, including dropping 15.76 seconds from his previous 100 freestyle time.

Ohio girls swimmer/diver of the week: Caroline Lied, St. Ursula – The sophomore won the 100 freestyle (:51.74) at the Southwest Ohio High School Swimming and Diving Classic Jan. 15. She also took first place with the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relay teams in the A finals.

Northern Kentucky boys swimmer/diver of the week: Adam Pawlak, Highlands – The senior took first place in the 50 butterfly and second in the 100-yard individual medley Jan. 14 at the Rock the Block meet in Louisville, helping Highlands to a first-place team finish.

Northern Kentucky girls swimmer/diver of the week: Savannah Bien, Villa Madonna – She placed first in the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference Division II diving competition with a score of 356.65 Jan. 12.

Ohio boys wrestler of the week: Silas Jacob, New Richmond – He defeated opponents from Taylor and Aiken at the Taylor tri-meet on Thursday, helping New Richmond to a team title. He also placed sixth at the Hammer and Anvil tournament at Western Brown on Saturday.

Ohio girls wrestler of the week: Charley Jones, New Richmond – She went 2-0 in the Lions’ match at Greeneview, including pinning the 2022 state runner-up.

NKY/IND wrestler of the week: Hunter Isaacs, Walton Verona – He won the 138-pound weight class at the Great Crossing Invitational with wins over two top-ranked opponents.

Boys archer of the week: Collin Smith, St. Henry – He shot his best score of the season with a 273, and captured his first top-10 finish of the season.

Girls archer of the week: Katie Schlensker, Scott – Her highest score this season (280) earned her sixth place at the Villa Madonna Tournament.
