Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, Dec. 2

In a vote that ended Dec. 2, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week, presented by Mercy Health, from high school sports action through Nov. 27.

Winners will receive certificates by the end of the sports season.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports.

Football team of the week: Wyoming – Wyoming’s 32-20 victory against Steubenville improved its record to a flawless 15-0 and put the Cowboys back into the Division IV state finals.

Ohio boys basketball team of the week: Georgetown – Georgetown met with Dayton Ponitz, picking up a 66-57 decision in its first game.

Ohio girls basketball team of the week: Deer Park – Deer Park improved its mark to 3-0 after a 59-31 win against Hughes and a 61-16 blowout against Cincinnati College Prep.

Ohio boys winter team of the week: St. Xavier hockey – In the Miami University tournament, went 4-0, including a 3-1 win over Gilmour Academy in the tournament championship.

Ohio girls winter team of the week: Reading bowling – Reading met with Lebanon on Nov. 21, earning a 2014-1808 win.

Ohio football player of the week: Nate Lyman, Kings – The sophomore set season-highs with six catches for 174 yards and two touchdowns in Kings’ 52-49 loss to Toledo Central Catholic in the DII state semifinals.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football player of the week: Talon Linder, Beechwood – After having only six catches in the team’s first 13 games, the junior caught two passes for touchdowns totaling 78 yards in the Tigers’ 48-0 2A state semifinal win over Lloyd.

Ohio big-school boys basketball player of the week: Gordy Sulfsted, St. Xavier – Sulfsted had nine points and seven rebounds in St. Xavier’s season-opener against Hilliard Bradley Nov. 25.

Ohio small-school boys basketball player of the week: Shaleyk Perry, Aiken – Perry had 19 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals in Aiken’s 76-59 win over Mt. Healthy Nov. 25.

Ohio big-school girls basketball player of the week: Ellie Horst, Lebanon – Horst had 11 points and six rebounds off the bench in Lebanon’s 68-52 win over Carroll Nov. 26. She also had seven points, six steals, four rebounds and three assists in a 68-30 win over Hamilton Nov. 22.

Ohio small-school girls basketball player of the week: Aubrie Huxel, Goshen – Huxel had 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists in Goshen’s 59-31 win over New Richmond Nov. 28.

Ohio boys bowler of the week: Ian Stacy, Reading - In his first two starts on varsity, he averaged 224 with a high game of 248. He helped Reading to a win over Lebanon and a runner-up finish at the Smokey Mountain Tournament in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Ohio girls bowler to the week: Payton Beard, St. Ursula – She led the Bulldogs to a 2-0 record to start the season. Her 432 series was tops overall in a win over Northwest, and she followed that up with a 429 series in a 24-pin win over Seton.

Ice hockey player of the week: Simon Kelley, St. Xavier – The senior goalie had a number of key saves as the Bombers won the Miami University Thanksgiving Tournament over the weekend.

Northern Kentucky wrestler of the week: Gaven Pugh, Simon Kenton – He won all three matches by pin at 157 at the Scott County Tommy Castle Classic, helping the Pioneers finish second in the team standings out of 10 teams.
