Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, Feb. 24

In a vote that ended Feb. 24, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week from high school sports action through Feb. 19.

Winners will receive certificates by the end of the sports season.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Here are this week's winners.

Ohio boys basketball team of the week: Reading – After falling to Taylor twice in the regular season, Reading got the 43-40 win over Taylor in the postseason on Feb. 18.

Ohio girls basketball team of the week: East Clinton – The Astros moved to 23-2 after beating Taft 84-12 and Norwood 54-49 in the Division III sectional tournament.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball team of the week: Campbell County – The Camels ended the regular season on a four-game winning streak, including a 75-40 win against Pendleton County and a 79-47 decision over Beechwood.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball team of the week: Villa Madonna – The Vikings beat Fairview 51-24 to end an eight-game losing streak and ending the regular season with a win.

Boys winter team of the week: Moeller ice hockey – The Crusaders opened up postseason play with a 7-2 win against Dublin Coffman on Feb. 18.

Girls winter team of the week: Reading bowling – Reading went wire-to-wire in its sectional tournament, leading the field in regulation and Bakers for a 3,183 total score, 503 pins better than runner-up Roger Bacon.

Ohio big-school boys basketball player of the week: Kameron Sanders, Fairfield – The sophomore was 10-14 from the field and 5-7 from beyond the arc against West Clermont, leading to a team-high 25 points.

Ohio small-school boys basketball player of the week: Mason Gabbard, Norwood – Against Seven Hills on Feb. 15, Gabbard had 21 points while grabbing a season-high eight rebounds.

Ohio big-school girls basketball player of the week: Maddie Mueller, Lebanon – Mueller knocked down 20 points while assisting five times as Lebanon topped Harrison on Feb. 15.

Ohio small-school girls basketball player of the week: Jayden Murphy, East Clinton – In the sectional finals on Feb. 18, Murphy dropped 13 points with 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals over Norwood.

Northern Kentucky boys basketball player of the week: Braden Fedders, St. Henry – He led the Crusaders with 29 points and nine rebounds as St. Henry stormed back from a 20-point deficit to upset Holy Cross.

Ohio boys bowler of the week: Eli Stelter, Anderson – The sophomore placed second at the ECC tournament with a 618 series. His high game was a 234.

Ohio girls bowler to the week: Jadyn Carle, Mercy McAuley – She rolled a 312 series to lead the Wolves to a win over Colerain.

Gymnast of the week: Maycee Herzog, Turpin – She finished second in the all-around behind last week’s winner, Viktoria Najem of Kings, after advancing to the state tournament in three events by placing first in the floor exercise, fourth in the vault and third in the bars. She, Abigail Dittman and Maggie Surrette helped Turpin advance to the state tournament as a team with their top 6 finishes.

Ice hockey player of the week: A.J. Luzi, Moeller – The senior had a hat trick in the 7-2 win over Dublin Coffman Feb. 18 in the OHSAA regional tournament in Columbus.

Ohio boys DI swimmer/diver of the week: Thackston McMullan, St. Xavier – The junior won the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle at the Division I 2023 Southwest Ohio District Swimming and Diving Championship Feb. 18. He led off the winning 200-yard relay and anchored the winning 400-yard freestyle relay.

Ohio boys DII swimmer/diver of the week: Patrick Gibbons, Badin – The junior won the 200-yard freestyle at the Division II 2023 Southwest Ohio District Swimming and Diving Championship Feb. 18.

Ohio girls DI swimmer/diver of the week: Addie Robillard, St. Ursula Academy – The sophomore won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke at the Division I 2023 Southwest Ohio District Swimming and Diving Championship Feb. 18. She also swam second in the winning 200-yard medley relay and anchored the winning 400-yard freestyle relay.

Ohio girls DII swimmer/diver of the week: Reese Reilly, Roger Bacon – The freshman won the 100-yard breaststroke at the Division II 2023 Southwest Ohio District Swimming and Diving Championship Feb. 18.

Northern Kentucky boys swimmer/diver of the week: Chase Knopf, Ryle – The freshman finished sixth in the boys 200-yard freestyle at the Kentucky High School Swimming and Diving Championships Feb. 18.

Northern Kentucky girls swimmer/diver of the week: Lainey Kruger, Notre Dame Academy – The University of Florida commit won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 46.36 seconds, a margin of nearly six seconds over the runner-up and an All-American qualifying time. She won the breaststroke in 1:02.30, also an All-American time and more than two seconds ahead of the runner-up to make her one of the most decorated swimmers in Notre Dame history with five championships.

Ohio boys wrestler of the week: Luke Campbell, Badin – He won both of his matches in the 157-pound weight class at the GCL-Coed championships, winning one match by default and one by pin.

Ohio girls wrestler of the week: Kaylee Ramsey, Clinton-Massie – She took second place in the 120-pound weight class at the Queen of the Jungle, winning two matches by pin and one by a 9-3 decision.

Northern Kentucky wrestler of the week: Seth Page, Ryle – He finished in fourth place in the 126-pound weight class at the first-round state tournament, guaranteeing his spot at the state championships.

Boys archer of the week: Gavin Armbruster, St. Henry – The sophomore took third place at the Crusader Quest with a score of 287.

Girls archer of the week: Amisha Sharp, Boone County – She achieved her first score of 280 or better with a 284, finishing in fifth place at the Crusader Quest.

Boys indoor track athlete of the week: James Walz, Oak Hills – He won the 400-meter dash at the Findlay Elite Invitational in a time of 54.80 seconds.

Girls indoor track athlete of the week: Natalie Kiefer, Harrison – She took third place in the Findlay Elite Invitational 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.77.
