Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, Sept. 16

In a vote that ended Sept. 16, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week, presented by Mercy Health, from high school sports action through Sept. 11.

Winners will receive certificates by the end of the sports season.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs each week during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. This was the first ballot for the 2022-2023 school year.

The winners are:

Ohio football team of the week: Lebanon – The Warriors lost their first three games of the season by a combined eight points. Lebanon finally broke into the win column with a 41-0 shutout of Little Miami.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football team of the week: Conner – The Cougars picked up win No. 1 in a tight 21-20 victory over visiting Scott.

Ohio fall boys team of the week: St. Xavier soccer – The Bombers beat Walnut Hills 1-0 and Lakota West 4-0 and haven’t allowed a goal in its last four matches.

Ohio fall girls team of the week: Ursuline Academy field hockey – The Lions lead the GGCL and also picked up a 4-0 non-conference win over Oakwood.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana fall boys team of the week: Grant County soccer – The Braves went 3-1, topping Simon Kenton, Carroll County and Shelby County with a loss to Bishop Brossart.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana fall girls team of the week: Notre Dame volleyball – The Pandas had a packed schedule, going 6-1 in seven matches and falling to just Mount Notre Dame in the Louisville Invitational.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys cross country runner of the week: Ian Giblin, Covington Latin – He finished fourth in the Jaguars Classic in Florence Sept. 10.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls cross country runner of the week: Isabella Gay, Conner – She finished third out of 125 runners in the Mason County Invitational Sept. 10.

Ohio boys cross country runner of the week: Cayden Dyer, Loveland – The senior won the Loveland Sunset Invitational Sept. 9 with a time of 16:22.10, helping Loveland to a team title.

Ohio girls cross country runner of the week: Madison Conatser, Loveland – The senior won the Loveland Sunset Invitational Sept. 9 with a time of 18:50.30, helping the girls to a team title.

Field hockey player of the week: Anne Majka, Ursuline Academy - The senior leads the lions to a victory with 2 assists and 1 goal during the recent game against Olentangy Orange. This keeps the lions in a strong 5-2 record and continues to leave them in first in the GGCL.

Ohio big school football player of the week: Andrew Weber, St. Xavier - Weber had a 66-yard kickoff return touchdown to go with three catches for 51 yards and a score in a 35-10 win over Penn.

Ohio small school football player of the week: Aaron McFarland, Taylor - The freshman had four catches for 148 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-0 win over Finneytown.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football player of the week: Zaccary Roberts, Covington Catholic – He stepped in as quarterback after an injury to Evan Pitzer during the game and completed 12-of-14 passes for 179 yards and four touchdowns in the Colonels’ 47-14 win over Dixie Heights.

Ohio boys golfer of the week: Aiden Kennedy, Moeller – At the GCL quad match at Hyde Park CC, Kennedy was he runner-up with an even 36 before finishing tied for sixth out of 100 golfers at the St. Charles Invite with an even 72. Both nine and 18-hole scores were personal bests.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys golfer of the week: Will Carter, St. Henry – He finished seventh in the All “A” Classic state tournament last weekend with a 74.

Ohio girls golfer of the week: Olivia Zirpoli, Ursuline Academy – In a match against Mariemont, Zirpoli had a one-over par 38 to lead the Lions to a victory.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls golfer of the week: Maddi Hudson, Grant County – She finished second in the Camacho Classic at Eagle Creek with a 74.

Ohio boys big school soccer player of the week: Landon Cornwall, Loveland – He had three assists in a win against West Clermont and scored the game-winning goals against Fairfield and Sycamore.

Ohio boys small school soccer player of the week: Owen Larkins, Taylor – He contributed two goals in a 7-1 win over Deer Park and one goal in a 3-0 win over Norwood.

Ohio girls big school soccer player of the week: Marlee Scanlon, Milford – She scored two of the Eagles’ three goals in a win over Turpin and added another in a win over Fairfield.

Ohio girls small school soccer player of the week: Brynn Stokes, Taylor – She scored a hat trick in the 6-0 win over Deer Park Sept. 6.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys soccer player of the week: Mason Pemberton, Cooper – He got the win in goal as Cooper beat Covington Catholic for the first time in team history, 2-1, as part of a 4-0 week by the Jaguars.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls soccer player of the week: Madison Braun, Ryle – She had a goal and three assists, and led a defense that allowed only two goals in three games, the fewest in the Raiders’ division, as the Raiders won their division at the Smoky Mountain Cup tournament in Gatlinburg.

Girls singles tennis player of the week: Gabrielle Kadakia, Oak Hills – The senior dispatched her opponent from Middletown without losing a single game.

Girls doubles tennis players of the week: Becca Rose and Autumn Strebel, McNicholas - In two of their last three matches, they lost the first set but came back to win in three sets. Their current record is 7-4.

Ohio big school volleyball player of the week: Paige Stockhoff, Oak Hills - The junior had 23 assists, seven aces and four digs in a win over Hamilton Sept. 8.

Ohio small school volleyball player of the week: Kaniya Lindsay, St. Bernard - The senior had 10 kills, six aces, two digs and three blocks in a win over Loveland Sept. 8.

Northern Kentucky volleyball player of the week: Madelyn Clark, Ryle – She dished out her 1,000th career assist against Great Crossing and dished out 27 assists in a five-set win.

Boys water polo player of the week: Carson McDaniel, Princeton – The senior was one of only seven players named to the “All-Ohio Cup” team this weekend after the Ohio Cup Tournament in Columbus. He led the Vikings to a 3-2 weekend scoring 29 goals, with 6 assists and 6 steals.

Girls water polo player of the week: Ava Carr, Sycamore – The junior led the Lady Aves water polo team this week in four games. She posted 13 goals, 5 assists, and 13 steals in that span to help the ladies best 3 out of 4 varsity challengers this week and help put us even closer to challenging 3-peat Ohio State champions Upper Arlington.
