Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week for Nov. 25

In a vote that ended Nov. 25, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week, presented by Mercy Health, from high school sports action through Nov. 20.

Winners will receive certificates by the end of the sports season.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports.

Football team of the week: Wyoming – Wyoming clinched a return to the state semifinals after a close 7-0 victory against Taft in the Division IV tournament.

Ohio girls basketball team of the week: Walnut Hills – Walnut Hills tipped off the season with a 62-13 win over Woodward on Nov. 18.

Ohio boys winter team of the week: Elder bowling – In the Division I Ohio invitational kick-off tournament, Elder took first in the championship rounds, finishing off Boardman 543-507 in the finals.

Ohio girls winter team of the week: St. Ursula bowling – In the Division I kick-off on Nov. 19, qualified as the No. 14 of 16 seeds for the championship rounds where it finished in eighth place overall.

Ohio big school football player of the week: Santos Alvarez, Anderson – Alvarez had nine catches for 114 yards and a touchdown in Anderson’s 46-42 loss to Kings in the regional title game.

Ohio small school football player of the week: Carter Russo, Badin – Russo ran 32 times for 140 yards and a touchdown in Badin’s 20-17 loss to Tippecanoe in the regional finals.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football player of the week: Kaiden Zulager, Lloyd Memorial – The senior scored five touchdowns in the Juggernauts’ 41-32 win over Breahitt County in a 2A regional final. He rushed for 125 yards and three touchdowns, caught a 28-yard touchdown pass on a fourth down, and returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

Ohio big-school girls basketball player of the week: Sophia Schiano, Turpin – Schiano had an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double to go with five assists and three steals in Turpin’s 47-33 win over Edgewood Nov. 18.

Ohio small-school girls basketball player of the week: Kaylee Williams, Deer Park – Williams had 20 points, eight steals and six rebounds in Deer Park’s 42-27 win over Western Hills Nov. 19.

Ohio boys bowler of the week: C.J. Herbers, Elder – His 192 three-game average, for a total of 576 pins, helped Elder win the Ohio High School State Invitational Kick-off tournament Nov. 19.

Ohio girls bowler to the week: Abby Jayne Huhn, Batavia – She was the highest-placing local girls bowler in the Ohio High School State Invitational Kick-off tournament, with 10th place and a 533 three-game total Nov. 19.

Northern Kentucky boys bowler of the week: Aidan Vickers, Lloyd Memorial – He had games of 268 and 234 for a 502 series, the highest series of the season so far by any local bowler.

Northern Kentucky girls bowler of the week: Hayley Pelstring, Notre Dame – She had the second-highest game of last week’s matches, a 203.

Ice hockey player of the week: Jack Schaltz, St. Xavier – The Bombers got their first conference win of the season over Olentangy Orange, 4-3, in overtime with a goal from Schaltz, a junior, Nov. 18.

Northern Kentucky swimmer/diver of the week: Adam Young, Boone County – The junior finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke and fifth in the 200 freestyle at the Flying Turkey Invitational at St. Xavier.
