Enquirer names high school athletes of the week winners, Sept. 30

In a vote that ended Sept. 30, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week, presented by Mercy Health, from high school sports action through Sept. 25.

Winners will receive certificates by the end of the sports season.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs each week during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports.

The winners are:

Ohio football team of the week: Clinton-Massie – After starting the season 0-4, Clinton-Massie has looked the part of defending state champions after winning two straight, including a 42-0 shutout of Goshen.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football team of the week: Campbell County – The Camels were upset-minded, beating George Rogers Clark for the first time since 2010 with a 21-20 overtime victory.

Ohio fall boys team of the week: Wyoming soccer – Wyoming has not allowed a goal since Aug. 27 and its 5-0 win at Taylor on Sept. 20 put it in first in the CHL.

Ohio fall girls team of the week: Mercy McAuley cross country – The Wolves won the Varsity Gold division of the Midwest XC Championships, including placing three runners in the top four.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana fall boys team of the week: Campbell County cross country – The Camels were runner-up finishers at the Bluegrass Invitational, falling to Madison Central by just a single point.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana fall girls team of the week: Holy Cross soccer – The Indians shut out Cooper 1-0 and have won its last two matches by a combined 11-0.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys cross country runner of the week: Nick Long, Bellevue – He finished fourth in the Campbell County championship Sept. 20.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls cross country runner of the week: Lily Parke, Beechwood – She finished second in the Williamstown Invitational Sept. 24.

Ohio boys cross country runner of the week: Bennett Turan, Mariemont - The senior won the Princeton XC Invitational Sept. 24 with a time of 16:02.40, helping the Warriors to a fourth-place team finish.

Ohio girls cross country runner of the week: Julia Verhoff, McAuley - She broke the school record again with a personal record time of 18:57.1, her first time breaking the 19-minute mark in the Midwest Catholic XC Championship Gold Division.

Field hockey player of the week: Mia Booth, Summit Country Day – The senior captain's hustle in the midfield generated a lot of our offensive momentum during our 1-1 tie against Oakwood Tuesday. Her drive and determination motivated our entire team throughout the game and into our 7v7 overtime. Mia will be playing Division I field hockey next fall at Bellarmine University.

Ohio big school football player of the week: Brayden Everitt, Lebanon – The senior quarterback ran for 127 yards and three touchdowns and threw for a score in Lebanon’s 45-14 win over Turpin.

Ohio small school football player of the week: Alex Grace, Indian Hill – Grace threw for 151 yards and two touchdowns and kicked a pair of extra points along with a 44-yard field goal to help give Indian Hill its first win of the season, 17-0 over Taylor.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football player of the week: Ayden Bauwens, Campbell County – In Campbell’s 21-20 overtime win over previously unbeaten George Rogers Clark, he rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown, posted four tackles, intercepted a pass, and blocked GRC’s extra-point in overtime that gave the Camels a chance to win the game with a successful PAT by Kaden Rose.

Ohio boys golfer of the week: Brendan MacRae, Milford – MacRae was medalist for Milford in a match with West Clermont as he shot a 39 at Friendly Meadows.

Ohio girls golfer of the week: Kylee Heidemann, Mercy McAuley – Heidemann shot a 73 at Glenview to win the individual GGCL championship.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys golfer of the week: Talen Beane, Campbell County – He shot an 80 to lead the Camels to second place in the Region 8 Tournament and a berth in the first round of the state tournament.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls golfer of the week: Emma Laker, Bishop Brossart – She shot an 80 in the Region 8 championship to qualify for the first round of the state tournament.

Ohio boys big school soccer player of the week: Caden Ammon, Elder – He scored two of three goals in the 3-0 win over Conner (Kentucky) Sept. 24.

Ohio boys small school soccer player of the week: Ethan Camp, Indian Hill – The junior goalkeeper tallied eight saves and two shutouts as the Braves beat Alter and Madeira. He has six shutouts on the season.

Ohio girls big school soccer player of the week: Jessie Nagle, Milford – The senior goalkeeper registered 12 saves in a 3-0 week for the Eagles. She allowed one goal versus Mount Notre Dame, but the top-ranked Eagles beat the Cougars 2-1.

Ohio girls small school soccer player of the week: Donna Bundy, Taylor – The senior got another shutout, her sixth, in the 6-0 win over Norwood Sept. 19.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys soccer player of the week: Jack Haggard, Highlands – He has three goals and an assist as a defensive outside back during Highlands’ four-game winning streak.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls soccer player of the week: Jill Planeaux, Bishop Brossart – She was named all-tournament in helping the Mustangs to the All “A” state semifinals.

Girls singles tennis player of the week: Sara McGinnis, Ross - She won first singles in Flight G of the Coaches with wins over Seton B, Ursuline B and Wyoming. She has not dropped a single set in 14 wins this season.

Girls doubles tennis players of the week: Brooklyn Zappin & Neha Arcot, Ursuline – They won the Lions’ only point in their match against St. Ursula, winning 6-2, 6-2 in first doubles.

Ohio big school volleyball player of the week: Sydney Breissinger, Ursuline – The senior had 13 digs, five assists and an ace in Ursuline’s straight-set win over Mount Notre Dame. She also posted 27 digs, four assists and four aces in a victory over St. Ursula.

Ohio small school volleyball player of the week: Mariah Gaines, Roger Bacon – The sophomore had 18 kills and 12 digs in Roger Bacon’s four-set win over CHCA Sept. 20.

Northern Kentucky volleyball player of the week: Milyn Minor, Scott – She had 15 kills, 15 digs and four blocks in Scott’s close 3-0 win over Bishop Brossart in a 37th District seeding game (25-23, 25-23, 25-21) Sept. 21.

Water polo player of the week: Adrian Banke, Sycamore – The senior captain earned 69 positive points over five games this past week. With 29 steals, 20 goals, 12 field blocks, four assists and four ejections drawn, Adrian help the Aviators secure wins over Walnut Hills and Thomas Worthington
