Enquirer wins general excellence, 24 other awards in Ohio APME contest

The Enquirer and Enquirer journalists received 25 awards during the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors statewide journalism contest Sunday, including first in general excellence among the state's large newspapers.

The Enquirer placed ahead of the Dayton Daily News and Columbus Dispatch in the general excellence category, which recognizes the collective effort of the staff across 28 contest categories.

A joint investigation with the Columbus Dispatch into the number of children who are sexually abused in Ohio, written by Terry DeMio and Dispatch reporters Jordan Laird and Bethany Bruner, won first place for investigative reporting. The Enquirer staff's Bengals Super Bowl section placed first for best sports special section.

"I'm extremely proud of the work Enquirer journalists do each and every day," said Beryl Love, executive editor of The Enquirer. "The APME awards showcase high impact journalism from across the state of Ohio, and it was an honor for us to be recognized among such great news organizations."

Enquirer journalists placed first in 10 other categories:

  • Randy Tucker: best business writer.

  • Kevin Aldridge: best columnist, best editorial writer.

  • Dan Horn: best feature writer.

  • Mike Nyerges: best graphic artist.

  • Kareem Elgazzar: best photographer.

  • Charlie Goldsmith: best sports enterprise.

  • Albert Cesare: best sports photo.

  • Amanda Rossmann: best video.

  • Jason Bredehoeff: best page design.

Enquirer journalists placed second in several categories: Jason Williams, best columnist; Paul Daugherty, best sports columnist; Meg Vogel and Keith BieryGolick, best video; Terry DeMio, best public service; Sharon Coolidge and Kevin Grasha, best explanatory reporting; and Randy Tucker and Dan Horn, best enterprise reporting.

2022 contest: Enquirer named top news staff by Ohio Associated Press Media Editors association

Third place awards went to: Alexander Coolidge, best business writer; Albert Cesare, best photographer and best feature photo; Amber Hunt and Amanda Rossmann, best investigative reporting; Dan Horn, best digital project; and staff for best digital presence.

Reporter Erin Couch placed first for best feature writer and best news writer in newspaper division II for her work at the Zanesville Times Recorder before joining the Enquirer.
