Enquirer's high school athlete of the week winners, Sept. 2

In a vote that ended Sept. 2, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week, presented by Mercy Health, from high school sports action through Aug. 28.

Winners will receive certificates by the end of the sports season.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs each week during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. This was the first ballot for the 2022-2023 school year.

The winners are:

Ohio football team of the week: Oak Hills – The Highlanders held off Sycamore for a 20-15 win, improving to 2-0 for the first time since 2018.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football team of the week: Simon Kenton – Simon Kenton already matched its win total from last season after taking a 42-40 shootout from Highlands.

Ohio fall boys team of the week: La Salle soccer – The Lancers beat Madeira 2-0 before taking a 3-2 road win at Oak Hills.

Ohio fall girls team of the week: Seton volleyball – The Saints are a perfect 4-0, picking up wins over Oak Hills, Lakota East and Harrison over the week.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana fall boys team of the week: Conner soccer – The Cougars dominated Holmes 10-0 on Aug. 23 before taking a 1-0 win over Campbell County on Aug. 27.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana fall girls team of the week: Beechwood soccer – The Tigers have won five in a row, including shutouts of Ludlow and Holy Cross with a 3-1 win over Ryle in between, scoring 21 goals and winning by shutout twice during that span. The win over Ryle and a previous week’s win over Newport Central Catholic were firsts in program history.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys cross country runner of the week: Lincoln Herald, Grant County – He ran a 16:59 on his home course to win the Grant County Invitational.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls cross country runner of the week: Audrey Shelton, Grant County – The senior ran a 19:22 on her home course to win the Grant County Invitational Aug. 27.

Ohio boys cross country runner of the week: Gianni Allwein, Walnut Hills – The senior was the highest-placing local runner in the boys varsity blue division at the Moeller Primetime Invitational cross country meet Aug. 26, where he placed second with a time of 16:00.70.

Ohio girls cross country runner of the week: Peyton Dooloukas, Goshen – The freshman won the Felicity-Franklin Early Bird with a time of 20:42.80.

Field hockey player of the week: Samantha Kayne, Indian Hill – The sophomore scored three goals in the Walnut Hills game, where Indian Hill won 9-0.

Ohio big school football player of the week: Hayden Jones, West Clermont – The sophomore had four catches for 107 yards and two touchdowns in West Clermont’s 21-16 win over Little Miami.

Ohio small school football player of the week: J.J. Miller, Williamsburg – Miller ran 10 times for 107 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 164 yards and three scores in Williamsburg’s 42-14 win over St. Bernard.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football player of the week: Kaleb Bleier, Simon Kenton – He rushed for 101 yards in two touchdowns while filling in for injured RB Jayden Lawson, and on defense, he had four tackles for loss in Simon Kenton’s 42-40 win over Highlands.

Ohio boys golfer of the week: Cannon Wells, McNicholas – The junior shot one-under par with his 35 at the Grizzly West Course as McNicholas beat Mariemont by a single stroke, 165-166.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys golfer of the week: Kevin Tobergte, St. Henry – He tied for sixth in the Highlands Invitational sponsored by St. Elizabeth Aug. 27, shooting a 77.

Ohio girls golfer of the week: Megan Childs, Seton – Childs was a medalist twice for Seton, first shooting a 38 in a win over Milford before leading the Saints to a win over Harrison with a 40.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls golfer of the week: Makenzie Code, Bishop Brossart – She set a personal-best 87 during a tournament last week.

Ohio boys big school soccer player of the week: Zach Stevens, Little Miami - He accrued 12 saves and allowed one goal in a 2-1 week.

Ohio boys small school soccer player of the week: Zach Howard, Taylor – The senior scored two goals and one assist in the 3-1 win over Harrison Aug. 25, adding another in the 3-0 win over Northwest Aug. 23.

Ohio girls big school soccer player of the week: Haley Murphy, Mercy McAuley – The freshman scored 2 goals Tuesday in a 2-2 tie with Badin and scored 1 goal Saturday in a 3-2 win against Little Miami.

Ohio girls small school soccer player of the week: Ashley Yontz, Fenwick - The sophomore recorded a hat trick in a 3-0 win over Newport Central Catholic.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys soccer player of the week: Dominick Dornbush, Simon Kenton – He scored five goals in three Pioneer wins last week as the team is on a four-game winning streak.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls soccer player of the week: Lynden Noll, Beechwood – She had eight saves in each of two wins over Ryle and Holy Cross as the Tigers allowed only one goal in three wins last week. It was Beechwood’s first win over Ryle.

Girls singles tennis player of the week: Annabelle Dugle, McNicholas- She won the deciding singles match versus Badin and won the only match for the Rockets in a 4-1 loss to Fenwick.

Girls doubles tennis players of the week: Mya Reardon and Maithilee Teredesai, Sycamore - After a tough start to the week, the duo rebounded to outlast their opposition from Lakota East 6-2, 6-3.

Ohio big school volleyball player of the week: Lindsey Green, Ursuline – The senior had 42 assists, five kills, nine digs and three blocks in Ursuline’s four-set win over Lebanon Aug. 27.

Ohio small school volleyball player of the week: Maria Billies, McNicholas - A junior setter had 53 assists, 35 digs, 12 kills and 11 aces in two wins against Carroll and Badin, and one five-set loss against Loveland.

Northern Kentucky volleyball player of the week: Sydney Nolan, Notre Dame – She had 21 kills, 2 blocks and 3 digs in the 3-2 win over Frederick Douglass Aug. 24, adding 10 kills, 1 block and 1 dig in the Aug. 25 win over Beechwood.

Water polo player of the week: Kyle Bobst, Sycamore – The senior goalie had 32 blocks in the past week including 16 in the win over Mason Tuesday. He blocked 3 five-meter penalty shots, scored 2 goals from the goal, and had 6 assists and 8 steals leading the Aviators on a 5-1 run.
