Entergy upgrades electric system in Tangipahoa Parish

PONCHATOULA, La. (WGNO) — Leaders with Entergy Louisiana are working to improve the company’s electric system in Tangipahoa Parish.

According to Entergy, one of the improvements involved the substation on Highway 22 in Tangipahoa Parish. It serves 18,000 residents and businesses, including a hospital. Company leaders said the expansion builds on several reliability projects performed in the southern region of the parish over the years.

During the project, workers expanded the substation yard, built a new control house and installed two new high-voltage breakers.

Along with the work done in Hammond and Madisonville, company leaders said the project will sectionalize the local electric system, making it more resilient.

“We know our customers are counting on us to provide them with reliable power and that is exactly why we are continuing to invest in our electric system,” said Entergy Louisiana President and CEO Phillip May.

Within the last two years, crews have upgraded more than two miles of power line and built a new half-mile power in the Tickfaw area. Workers also installed a regulator bank to monitor voltage and a recloser to protect the electric system from temporary impacts.

In the Hammond, Independence and Springfield areas, crews installed fuses, reclosers and regulators to improve reliability. Crews in Ponchatoula replaced utility poles, crossarms, and insulators and installed five smart devices.

Within the last five years, Entergy workers performed transmission work at the Ponchatoula, Hammond and Amite substations. During that time, they modernized protection and overhead equipment along with transformers.

They also replaced circuit breakers, arrestors and insulators and also enhanced animal mitigation measures in Hammond.

Additionally, about three miles of powerlines along Esterbrook Road in southern Ponchatoula, have been upgraded.
