‘A significant loss’: L.A. City Council honors Sam Rubin

The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday formally honored the career and contributions of late KTLA 5 entertainment anchor Sam Rubin, who died of a heart attack last Friday.

“For many of us native Angelenos, Sam was a regular fixture on our home television,” said Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez, 7th District, who presented the tribute. “His unexpected passing is a significant loss to the journalism community and his many fans. However, his legacy endures through his groundbreaking work and the positive influence on those he had around him.”

Rodriguez joined other local and state lawmakers in reflecting on Rubin’s place in history as one of the most gifted and connected entertainment journalists in the world. He was an integral part of KTLA 5’s weekday morning broadcast, delivering news reports, interviewing celebrities and often participating in oddball live segments that would have his co-workers in tears with laughter.

Some of these career highlights were featured during a seven-hour live broadcast on Monday morning.

“It’s been incredibly moving to see the outpouring of love for Sam Rubin over the past few days,” L.A. Mayor Karen Bass posted on X, formerly Twitter. “Sam was an iconic reporter who delivered morning news and entertainment highlights to millions of Angelenos. His voice, his warmth and his dedication to sharing the latest with KTLA viewers will be cherished by so many.”

Rubin was 64. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
