The British pop star's signature hit is experiencing a major resurgence following its feature in 'Saltburn,' which sparked a viral TikTok trend

The groove is more alive than ever for Sophie Ellis-Bextor.

After the British pop star's 2001 hit "Murder on the Dancefloor" received a significant placement in Emerald Fennell's film Saltburn, the song has seen a major resurgence — and earned its most-ever global Spotify streams in a single day on New Year's Eve, PEOPLE can exclusively reveal.

"Murder on the Dancefloor" received 1.5 million Spotify streams around the world on Dec. 31, marking a 340% increase from its listenership on New Year's Eve 2022 and earning the track its debut placement on the streaming service's global songs chart at No. 130.

The dance-pop hit was also streamed 360% more times in the U.S. in the first week following the Nov. 22 release of Saltburn. Ellis-Bextor's Read My Lips album (which features "Murder on the Dancefloor") also increased in streams by 340% in the same week-long period.

The streaming spike for "Murder on the Dancefloor" comes shortly after its use in Saltburn sparked a TikTok trend of users recreating actor Barry Keoghan's movements in the film's final scene. Ellis-Bextor, 44, participated in the trend on Dec. 31, which perhaps led more Spotify users to give the track a listen.

Ellis-Bextor recently spoke to PEOPLE about her song's use in a particularly cheeky scene of Saltburn, which features Keoghan's character dancing naked around a large mansion. "I didn't really know exactly how it would play in terms of the role it was in the movie until I saw it at the screening, but I absolutely loved it," she said. "I think it's such a clever, funny, smart film. I really enjoyed it."

After watching the scene, she met Keoghan, 31, and "just had a giggle."

"I mean, he's never going to be able to hear that in the same way again," said Ellis-Bextor with a laugh. "And every time he's out and that comes on, people are going to think he's going to strip off!"

Following its initial 2001 release on Read My Lips, "Murder on the Dancefloor" stayed on the U.K. Singles Chart for a whopping 23 weeks, became a top-10 hit worldwide and still stands as Ellis-Bextor's most successful single to date internationally.
