These local fishermen are pulling plastic from the Nile
Egyptian environmental group “VeryNile” gives them extra income
for clearing the river of garbage
(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) CO-FOUNDER OF VERYNILE, KHADIJA HAFEZ, SAYING: "They are the ones who know the Nile best, they know where plastic can be collected and where it accumulates. So when we said, we want you to collect plastic, they went ahead and collected large amounts of plastic. They are the ones who know the Nile best."
VeryNile buys plastic litter from the fishermen at a higher price
than what’s on offer at recycling plants
They aim to clean up close to 1,000 pounds of waste a week
A cleaner Nile has led to more fish
(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) FISHERMAN WHO COLLECTS PLASTIC FROM NILE, SAEED HASSANEIN, SAYING: "Ever since this project was launched, our income has improved. Good things coming out of the sea (Nile) also increased. At first, there wasn't much fish, fish was very little. Now, it (fish) is increasing because the Nile is cleaner, on the one hand, and on the other hand fishermen have two sources of income."
