Equestrian estate features special spot for tortoises | Photos

A five-acre estate in West Boca, with a total of seven bedrooms and seven baths, hit the market on Sept. 17, priced at $4 million.

Like many other luxury properties in South Florida, it features a gourmet kitchen, exercise room, pool and lush landscaping. But in addition to facilities that would make any horse owner envious, the property has a feature not likely to be found at any other property in the area: its own tortoise farm.

“They are his pets,” said Katia Reisler, a director of luxury sales with Douglas Elliman Real Estate in Boca Raton, who shares the listing with Rebecca Spooner of Siemens Group Realty. “The owner has had them since he was a child.”

Located at 8540 Surrey Lane, the home is one of 41 custom homes in Horseshoe Acres, an enclave of homes set on large lots that’s tucked away off Clint Moore Road west of Boca Raton.

“Horseshoe Acres is about 190 acres of lush tropical landscaping and tree-lined streets with equestrian-inspired names such as Bridle Path, Wagon Wheel Drive and Stagecoach Lane,” said Reisler. “This is the only property available on the market right now in Boca Raton that has a barn.”

Fully fenced and gated, the one-story main house, built in 1976, has four bedrooms and four baths, a gourmet kitchen, living room, formal dining room and exercise room.

There’s also a guest house with three bedrooms, three baths, a kitchen, living room and laundry room.

“One of the unique features of this house are the floors,” Reisler said. “The owner added walnut floors in the main house made from wood from a 100-year-old Amish barn.”

Exterior features include a barn with seven stalls, a manager’s office, groom’s quarters, a feed room and tack room, as well as five paddocks. Horseshoe Acres has private trails for riders.

The compound also is home to 150 fruit trees and clusia hedges lining the perimeter of the property.

Reisler said the owner is selling because he’s moving to northern Palm Beach County and that he plans to take tortoises with him.
