GOP Senate candidate and former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens, who resigned the Missouri governorship in 2018 amid multiple scandals, said Tuesday that he would not support Sen. Mitch McConnell as Republican leader should he be elected to the U.S. Senate.

Greitens told Steve Bannon, the former White House chief strategist who was both fired and pardoned by former President Donald Trump, on his podcast Tuesday that “we need new leadership in the U.S. Senate.”

“The Republican Party is now the MAGA party,” Greitens said.

Greitens said that after the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, McConnell made an effort to “stab President Trump in the back.” McConnell did not support Trump’s unfounded claims of election fraud following the election but opposed an effort to impeach him after the riot.

“We need new, strong, MAGA leadership,” Greitens said.

Greitens is one of several candidates vying for the Republican nomination to replace Sen. Roy Blunt, who announced earlier this year that he would retire from the Senate after the 2022 cycle. Greitens resigned as governor a year and a half into his term amid sexual and campaign finance misconduct allegations.

Other candidates in the race include Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt, Reps. Vicky Hartzler and Billy Long, and Mark McCloskey, a St. Louis attorney who was pictured alongside his wife brandishing guns at Black Lives Matter protesters near his home last year.

Schmitt is slightly leading in the primary, according to a recent Remington Research Group poll, edging out Greitens by just 1%.

“Our historic campaign for U.S. Senate has unprecedented support and momentum as we continue to fight to put Missouri and America first,” Schmitt said in a statement to the Missouri Times about the poll. “We remain best positioned to keep Missouri’s open seat red and win the fight next November.”
