Eric Schmitt released his first TV ad of the general election cycle Thursday, positioning himself as a foil in Washington, D.C. to Democrats' economic agenda as he seeks Missouri's open U.S. Senate seat.

Schmitt, the Republican nominee to succeed U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt and current Missouri attorney general, calls himself a "grill dad who flips a mean burger."

"But thanks to Biden, it now costs an arm and a leg to cook out," Schmitt says. "Ground beef is up 36%. That's crazy. Biden's inflation is taking the sizzle out of our economy, and costing your family over $700 a month."

Schmitt pledges to "end the wasteful spending" and "put more money back in your pocket."

The ad provides a look into Schmitt's messaging as he enters the final months of the campaign as the favorite. It notably does not mention his Democratic opponent, Trudy Busch Valentine. In a statement Thursday promoting the ad, Schmitt's campaign mentions her once, saying she supports "the Biden-Schumer agenda" in Washington.

Stations across the state will air the ad in the coming weeks. According to filings with the Federal Communications Commission, it is set to be shown more than 80 times on KY3 in Springfield through Oct. 10. In Columbia, it will air more than 50 times on KMIZ during that same period.

The AG's focus on rising prices and inflation is not an uncommon one among Republicans as midterms approach. Conservatives have sought to portray the president and congressional Democrats' expansive legislative priorities as harmful to the U.S. economy, frequently pointing to grocery prices as a marker many voters can relate to. In the statehouse in recent weeks, Republican lawmakers have used that argument to support their passage of tax cuts.

Busch Valentine, in a pair of ads released earlier this week, attacked Schmitt directly over his activation of Missouri's abortion ban and vote as a state senator to allow the sale of state farmland to foreign buyers.
