Erie-area high school winter sports teams stay busy leading up to holiday break

The holiday break is approaching, but there is still a heavy schedule for area high school sports leading into the Christmas weekend.

In boys basketball, Cathedral Prep (3-0) and McDowell (5-1) will face tough national competition in Florida at the KSA Tournament, which starts Tuesday. Most of this week is filled with non-region games, including unbeaten Girard (Class 3A) hosting Class 4A Fort LeBoeuf on Tuesday before 4A Harbor Creek visits the YellowJackets on Friday.

In girls basketball, a Region 6 showdown is set for Thursday as General McLane visits Harbor Creek. Both teams were unbeaten heading into Monday night region-opening games. McDowell (4-0) will be in Florida for the KSA Tournament, while Cathedral Prep also looks to remain unbeaten after region matchups this week.

Holiday basketball tournaments will be in full swing next week, with nearly two dozen girls and boys tourneys scheduled in the region.

Cathedral Prep's Amir Johnson, top, wrestles St. Joe's Austin Zimmerman in a 114-pound bout during the Rambler Duals team tournament inside Prep's Hagerty Family Events Center on Saturday. Prep wrestles Meadville in a Region 5 match Wednesday.

In wrestling, region rivals meet all week, including in Tuesday's Region 4 duals featuring Girard at Fort LeBoeuf and Northwestern at General McLane. Wednesday's action includes a pair of Region 5 matchups with McDowell facing Erie High and Cathedral Prep visiting Meadville. The Ramblers and Trojans each competed in the Rambler Duals on Saturday, with Prep going 3-1 and McDowell finishing 3-2. Prep's lone loss was a tough 34-33 defeat against Cleveland St. Edward in the sixth round.

Also this week, girls Metro bowling is scheduled for Wednesday and a Region 3 swim meet is set for Thursday.
