Point producers, big pins, fast laps: Erie County high school top performers for Dec. 19-23

Erie-area high school athletes provided some highlight-worthy moments this past week.

Boys basketball

Tyler Grove, McDowell: He scored a game-high 22 points in the Trojans' 72-53 loss to Herriman (Utah) at the KSA Tournament in Orlando, Florida.

Jake Sambuchino, Cathedral Prep: Sambuchino led the Ramblers with 12 points in a 58-27 victory against Coral Shores (Florida) at the KSA Tournament. ... Sambuchino scored 11 points and was named co-MVP after the Ramblers (6-0) beat Pingree (Massachusetts) 57-47 in the finals to win the KSA Blue Division.

Nate Edwards, Girard: He connected on three of the YellowJackets' 10 3-pointers and led the way with 17 points as Girard stayed unbeaten with a 70-30 rout of Fort LeBoeuf.

Rylan Smith, Corry: Smith poured in 19 points to pace the Beavers to a 65-54 non-region win against Seneca.

David Gibson, North East: He had 13 points as the Grapepickers rallied in the fourth quarter to edge Cambridge Springs 52-51.

Colton Carpenter, Iroquois: Carpenter led the Braves with 16 points in an 82-61 non-region loss to Eisenhower.

Andreas McCullum, Erie High: He scored 15 points, including three 3-pointers, to lead the Royals to a 64-48 win at Mercyhurst Prep in non-region action.

Amaree Pickens, Cathedral Prep: Pickens poured in a game-high 20 points as the Ramblers stayed unbeaten and rolled past Southern (Kentucky) at the KSA Tournament in Florida. ... He scored 14 points and was named co-MVP after the Ramblers downed Pingree (Massachusetts) 57-47 in the finals to win the KSA Blue Division.

Kamden Kramer, McDowell: Kramer scored 12 points to lead the Trojans in a 55-34 loss to Saint Joseph Regional (New Jersey) at the KSA Tournament in Florida.

Makayla Presser-Palmer, Northwestern

Makayla Presser-Palmer, Northwestern: The Wildcats rolled past Eisenhower 42-28 in Region 3 action as Presser-Palmer led the way with 22 points.

Alaina Rodemoyer, North East: Rodemoyer scored 12 points to pace the Grapepickers in a 54-7 rout of Iroquois.

Lillirose Lang, Mercyhurst Prep: The Lakers rolled past Seneca 63-29 as Lang poured in 18 points, including one of the team's nine 3-pointers.

Lily Polk, Girard: The YellowJackets picked up their first win, holding off Titusville 30-26, with Polk recording a team-best nine points, including the game's only 3-pointer.

Hope Garrity, Fairview: Garrity led three Tigers in double digits with 19 points, including three 3-pointers, as Fairview downed Harbor Creek 56-35.

Jayden McBride, Cathedral Prep: The Ramblers beat Erie High 63-28 in a Region 6 opener as McBride went 8-for-8 from the foul line and finished with a game-high 23 points. ... She added 12 points in the Ramblers' 52-18 win against Fairview.

Jillian Soder, Fort LeBoeuf: The Bison dropped a 45-34 decision to General McLane despite Soder's game-high 19 points. ... Soder also poured in a game-high 23 points Thursday in the Bison's 55-51 loss to Conneaut.

Jessica Messenger, Union City: The Bears handled Corry 50-14 as Messenger deposited 15 points to lead all scorers.

Jessica Hetz, McDowell: Hetz paced the Trojans with 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, in a 41-34 win against South Beauregard (Louisiana) at the KSA Tournament in Florida. ... Hetz was named MVP of the KSA Tournament's Red Bracket after she poured in 15 points to lead the Trojans to a 48-37 win against Fouke (Arkansas) in the final Thursday.

Grace Abele, Iroquois: The Braves picked up their third win of the year by beating host Commodore Perry 33-30 as Abele recorded her first career double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Mercedes Feronti, McDowell: The Trojans improved to 6-0 as they beat Kings Park (New York) 35-30 behind a team-best 11 points from Feronti at the KSA Tournament.

Girls swimming

Annastasia Walker, Fairview: Walker won the 100 backstroke, 200 individual medley and swam a leg on the winning 400 freestyle relay to help the Tigers beat North East 129-39 in a Region 2 meet.

Paige Goray, Harbor Creek: Goray took part in three event wins (200 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 medley relay) to help the Huskies upend Union City 97-74 in a Region 2 meet.

Ellie Natemeier, Cathedral Prep: The Ramblers' sophomore was part of four event wins, the 50 freestyle, 100 free and two relays (200 medley, 400 free) in Prep's 123-32 win against Mercyhurst Prep.

Boys swimming

Tanner Pike, Union City
Tanner Pike, Union City

Tanner Pike, Union City: He swam a leg on the school record-setting 200 medley relay (1 minute, 56.1 seconds) and also won the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle as well as taking part in the winning 200 free relay during the Bears' 102-51 win against Harbor Creek in a Region 2 meet.

Mitchell Myers, Fairview: Myers won the 200 IM by more than 2.5 seconds and also was part of two winning relays (200 free, 400 free) as the Tigers downed North East 120-53.

Owen Carson, Cathedral Prep: He won the 200 individual medley by more than 8 seconds, finished first in the 100 backstroke and took part in two winning relays (200 medley, 200 freestyle) in the Ramblers' 108-29 win against Mercyhurst Prep.

Kyle Cousins, General McLane: Cousins opened a Region 4 match against Northwestern with a pin at 152 pounds in 1 minute, 11 seconds, sparking a run of six straight falls in the Lancers' 57-16 victory.

Clay Thomas, Union City: Thomas recorded a pin in 52 seconds in a 160-pound bout as the Bears racked up five falls in a 42-21 Region 3 victory at Youngsville.

Jaden Crockett, Cathedral Prep: The Ramblers' 172-pounder claimed a 25-10 technical fall win against Meadville's Rocco Woodrow to help Prep snap a 27-27 tie with one bout left in Prep's 38-27 Region 5 victory.

Kolton Sutter, Northwestern: The Wildcats edged Girard 39-33 in a Region 4 match thanks in part to Sutter's 7-5 decision against Riley Horn at 139 pounds.

Michael Spires, Seneca: The Bobcats' 215-pounder provided the only non-forfeit points for Seneca with a 44-second pin as Union City won the Region 3 match 54-18.

Taylor Kretz, McDowell: Kretz, a freshman, dominated the lanes at Rolling Meadow, recording a blistering 768 high series and the league's top game (269) — both Metro and school records — to help the Trojans beat Cathedral Prep 24-4 and stay unbeaten in Metro action.
