Erie Humane Society plans 2nd pet crematory to meet growing demand and fund its shelter

The Erie Humane Society plans to build a second crematory on its campus on Zimmerly Road in Millcreek Township.

The nonprofit operates the only pet crematory in Erie County.

"We are a local option and anyone can use our services," Erie Humane Society Executive Director Nicole Leone said.

The Humane Society crematory opened in February 2004 when the organization moved from West 38th Street in Erie, near the Erie Zoo, to its facility at 2407 Zimmerly Road, west of the Millcreek Mall.

The second crematory will be built behind the society's adjacent Wellness Center at 2433 Zimmerly Road and will be twice as large as the existing crematory to help meet a growing demand for pet cremation, Leone said.

"The new crematory will allow us to expand the service we offer to the community," she said. "The community also helps us by using the crematory because all the money we earn from it goes to our shelter."

The society has asked Millcreek Township for approval to build the crematory in an area zoned for mixed-used development. Millcreek Township zoning regulations do not list a crematory as a permitted use in the MU-2 district.
