ERIE -- Rick and Maureen Spotts were named Family of the Year and both Peter Dusseau and Tom Merce were named Knights of the Year by St. Joseph Council 7413, Knights of Columbus.

The Spotts are very active members of the council, its Ladies Auxiliary and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Erie. Their children assist with the weekly bingo games held in Monroe by the council, said Grand Knight Tad Norts, who announced the awards this week. Mr. Spotts and Merce are also trustees for the council and Dusseau serves as outside guard for the meetings. Both Dusseau and Merce are also active in the parish and council and helped restart the bingo nights following the COVID-19 pandemic. Their wives – Pat Dusseau and Gail Merce – also assist with bingo.

Paul and Julie Burgard of Erie were named Family of the Month for August and Jim Smith of Toledo was named Knight of the Month for August. These awards were announced by Norts at the council’s monthly meeting held Aug. 2. The Burgards are active members of the council and parish. Mr. Burgard assists with bingo and Mrs. Burgard cleans the rectory for Rev. Mark Prill, pastor at St. Joseph’s and chaplain for the council. Smith formerly was a bingo caller for many years, Norts said.

Ben Roelant, deputy grand knight, is chairman for bingo that is held at the Monroe Knights of Columbus hall located at 202 W. Front St. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and lightning bingo starts at 5:45 with regular bingo at 7:15, Norts said.

Rick Liechty of Luna Pier and Steve Mishka of Erie are the newest members of the council after completing their first degree. Anyone interested in joining the council can contact Conrad Ausmus or Norts.
