Escape from fire: Man and dog safe as home is destroyed at Baxter Lake in Rochester

ROCHESTER — An early morning fire Sunday destroyed a man's home at the Baxter Lake Recreation Area.

Firefighters were called to 99 Four Rod Road about 7 a.m., according to Rochester Fire Department Capt. Steven Plante. He said the man and his dog inside the home were able to get out safely.

"The units in there are pretty close together," Plante said. "It's a decent sized campground, and we were concerned about the adjacent sites. But we managed to contain the fire to the one location."

"The mutual aid tanker from Strafford was drafting water from Baxter Lake to our equipment," said Rochester Fire Department Deputy Chief Adam Hughes.

Hughes said the fire was under control by around 9 a.m. He said the cause of the fire remained under investigation Sunday.

Plante said there was a propane tank close to the structure and firefighters safely vented it.
