One of four inmates who escaped a Mississippi jail nearly a week ago and sparked a nationwide manhunt has been captured in Texas, authorities announced Thursday.

Jerry Raynes was nabbed in Spring Valley about 10 miles west of downtown Houston, after he and three other detainees escaped Saturday from the Raymond Detention Center outside Mississippi's capital of Jackson, Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said.

The U.S. Marshals Service, Harris County Sheriff’s Office and Spring Valley Police Department assisted with Raynes' capture in the small town, more than 400 miles from where he fled the Hinds County jail.

Raynes faces extradition back to Mississippi, the sheriff said in a tweet.

The escapee had been incarcerated for auto theft and burglary.

Escapee stole public works vehicle, investigators say

Investigators said Raynes fled to Texas after stealing a Hinds County Public Works vehicle, found Sunday under a freeway overpass near Houston. It was not clear whether he traveled alone. Before his arrest, Raynes was spotted on surveillance video at a Hedwig Village service station late Sunday morning.

The other two detainees, Casey Grayson and Corey Harrison, remained at large Friday. When authorities announced Raynes capture Thursday, they gave no updates on Grayson and Harrison's possible whereabouts.

He was taken into custody at a Houston hospital before he could be discharged after seeking treatment for an unspecified medical condition, U.S. Marshals reported.

Raynes is the second escaped prisoner to be found during a manhunt involving multiple law enforcement agencies that began last week.

On Wednesday, escaped inmate Dylan Arrington died after barricading himself in a central Mississippi home and setting it on fire during an armed standoff with deputies. Arrignton, who was 22, is suspected of killing a man and stealing his pickup truck after the escape.

Arrington is suspected of fatally shooting Anthony Watts, a 61-year-old church pastor killed Monday night in Jackson after he pulled over to help a man who matched Arrington's description. That man shot Watts several times and then stole his Red Dodge Ram, police said. Watts died at the scene.

The escape

The breach occurred Saturday night, when the prisoners escaped through the roof of the jail, according to the sheriff's office. All four men had been incarcerated for a range of felony charges, most involving theft.

The men are believed to have initially escaped from through breaches in a cell. The sheriff said the men might have camped out on the roof before fleeing and going their separate ways.

Anyone with information about their whereabouts is asked to call 911.
