ESPN draft analyst believes Florida’s Kyle Trask is ‘viable solution’ for Patriots

All eyes in the NFL draft right now are on the top 5 quarterbacks.

Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Justin Fields, Mac Jones and Trey Lance have drowned out the names of anyone formidable who could follow them. Some of the names who’ll pop up once these five are off the board will include Texas A&M’s Kellen Mond, Florida’s Kyle Trask, Stanford’s Davis Mills, Wake Forest’s Jamie Newman and Arkansas’ Feleipe Franks.

The New England Patriots will likely be in search for a rookie quarterback to learn behind Cam Newton this season. Mond’s a four-year starter with a ton of potential and his name has been linked to the Patriots. Another SEC quarterback who could find himself is Trask, as draft analyst Matt Miller explains on ESPN’s “Get Up.”

“Cam Newton is fine for right now, but that is a bandaid,” he said. “They need a long-term solution at the quarterback position — Kyle Trask from Florida. While not a first-rounder, he is accurate. He has good enough arm strength. He has good enough mobility. And coming out of the Dan Mullen system, which is what got Dak Prescott ready for the NFL, I think he is more pro ready than a lot of people believe.

“Kyle Trask, if you miss out on the big five at quarterback in New England, I think he is a viable solution for Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels. Someone they can draft and develop and then get onto the field.”

Trask is a 6-foot-5, 240 pound gunslinger who’s thrown for 68 touchdowns and only 15 interceptions over the last two seasons as Florida’s starter. He had heavy steam as a Heisman candidate throughout a majority of 2020 and was named a finalist, but that slowed down as the Gators fizzled out toward the end of the season.

Because it’s unlikely the Patriots trade up for one of top quarterbacks, it’s very possible they grab a player like Trask or Mond after the first round.
