ESPN's Stephen A. Smith: Years of Bengals' ineptitude can't be undone by one season

The roller-coaster ride of Stephen A. Smith opinions about the Cincinnati Bengals continues.

Sports commentator Stephen A. Smith speaks during a live taping of ESPN's "First Take" at Florida A&M University's new Will Packer Performing Arts Amphitheater as part of the school's homecoming festivities Friday, Oct. 29, 2021.

Smith certainly isn't the only one predicting the Bengals won't return to the Super Bowl - though he did at least say on ESPN's "First Take" that he thinks they will be a playoff team.

But he added that quarterback Joe Burrow - recovering from appendectomy surgery - will be fine "until he gets hit," and suggested that he's indifferent about the change of the name of the home of the Bengals from Paul Brown Stadium - which he called "Mike Brown Stadium" - to Paycor Stadium.

"They're the Cincinnati Bengals," Smith added. "One season is not going to convince me that their years of ineptitude have been eradicated. I know they've renamed their stadium. It's no longer Mike Brown Stadium and all of this other stuff. I forgot what the name of it is - I don't care. It does not matter."

In February, Smith said he was more confident in the Bengals than the Rams to win Super Bowl 56.

In April 2020, Smith said Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa would have a better NFL career than Burrow because Burrow has to play for the Bengals. He called Cincinnati "football's version of purgatory," adding, "Who the hell would want to play for the Cincinnati Bengals?"
