Estonia completes border fence with Russia as part of high-tech border upgrade

Estonia has finished building a 40-kilometer fence along its southern border to strengthen its boundary with Russia, Politico reported on Dec. 14.

Estonia is fortifying its border because of concerns about provocations from Russia. The goal is to create high-tech border infrastructure, said Interior Minister Lauri Läänemets.

The EU’s eastern frontier running along the Estonian border should be equipped with the most advanced security and drone surveillance systems, said Läänemets.

The project will be fully completed in 2025.

“Covering almost 340 kilometers of border is not an easy undertaking, whether it’s mainland fence infrastructure or surveillance systems on the water,” said Läänemets.

“Estonia has applied for EU funding to develop capabilities such as drone surveillance and radar monitoring positions on lakes and rivers, but so far our needs have not met the criteria or been prioritized.”
