Etowah County driver's license office opens next week in new location

Right on schedule, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Etowah County driver’s license office will be open for business at 8 a.m. Monday in its new home on the second floor of the Etowah County Courthouse.

The former office in an old, decrepit building at a former air depot on Rains Street in Glencoe shut down on Wednesday in preparation for the move, which was announced in July by county and ALEA officials. The first of October was the target date for finalizing it.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency will pay Etowah County $14,400 annual rent to house its driver's license office in the courthouse.

People needing full-service assistance — to take a permit or license test, obtain a Star ID or make major changes to a license — will now go to Room 219, which previously had been occupied by the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. The office will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

RSVP will take the spot on the second floor vacated by Juvenile Probation’s move to the county’s Judicial Building, sharing it with space set aside for local legislators.

Basic license renewals can still be handled in the probate office.

ALEA will pay annual rent of $14,400 to the county. Officials said when the move was announced that it would allow the agency to provide better service to residents of Etowah County and elsewhere, and be a more secure working environment for its employees.
