BRUSSELS, Jan 18 (Reuters) - The European Commission proposed on Friday two mandates for trade negotiations with the United States, designed to cut tariffs on industrial goods and to deepen regulatory cooperation.

The mandates, which will need to be approved by the EU's 28 member countries, are in line with a preliminary transatlantic agreement struck in July.

U.S. President Donald Trump then agreed to hold off imposing tariffs on EU car imports while the two sides looked to improve trade ties.

However, the EU proposals fall short of the wide-ranging wish-list, including comprehensive agricultural market access, set out by Washington a week ago. (Reporting by Philip Blenkinsop; editing by Francesco Guarascio)
