The newly sanctioned people include conservative clerics and the spokesman of the EU-listed Headquarters for Enjoining Right and Forbidding Evil.
Newly included in the list of sanctioned entities is the Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution, a body that promoted several projects undermining the freedom of girls and women and discriminating minorities, according to a statement. The move brings the number of blacklisted persons and entities to 204 and 34 respectively
The decision comes shortly after new measures imposed by the British and Australian governments. The UK earlier said it was sanctioning seven Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps senior leaders. Five of the officials are financiers who “are responsible for funneling money into the regime’s brutal repression,” Foreign Secretary James Cleverly was quoted as saying.
