Eugene police seize heroin, meth and 1,900 pills of suspected fentanyl in warrant search

A Eugene man was arraigned Thursday on nine charges, including two alleged commercial drug offenses, after police say they found significant amounts heroin, meth and roughly 1,9000 suspected fentanyl pills at his home.

Officers with Eugene Police Department's street crimes unit, SWAT team, the special investigations unit and a drone team executed a narcotics-related search warrant Wednesday at a house on Ruskin Street in northwest Eugene. They stopped Raymond Martin Kennedy, 37, leaving the area in a Maroon Chevy HHR car, and took him into custody without incident at the intersection of Royal Avenue and Highway 99N, according to Eugene police spokesperson Melinda McLaughlin.

Following the traffic stop arrest, SWAT officers went to the residence and searched the home. While executing the search warrant, officers seized the following amounts of drugs and weapons:

  • 270 grams of heroin

  • 81 grams meth

  • Approximately 1,900 pills, or 165 grams of counterfeit oxycodone, which is suspected to be fentanyl, according to McLaughlin

  • Two guns, one of which was loaded

Kennedy was taken to Lane County Jail, and Thursday he was arraigned on nine charges in three separate cases and incidents. The first was for alleged firearm possession as a felon on March 8.

A second case was filed on March 28, with five charges that include: unlawful heroin possession, unlawful meth possession, possessing a firearm as a felon, being a felon possessing a restricted weapon (taser), and driving with a suspended license.

In the final case, from May 31, Kennedy was arraigned on charges of: possessing a firearm as a felon, unlawful heroin possession and unlawful meth possession, which were both listed as commercial drug offenses.

To be considered a commercial drug offense, three of these five criteria must be met:

  • Defendant is in possession of $300 or more in cash

  • Possesses a gun or other dangerous weapon intended to be used in connection with a controlled substance offense

  • Possesses materials for packaging controlled substances

  • Possesses drug transaction records or customer lists

  • Possesses more than 100 grams of a substance that contains detectable amounts of heroin

Kennedy's attorney John Kolego declined to comment on the case Friday morning, saying in an email "it's inappropriate to comment on a matter currently under pending litigation."

Kennedy's next court appearance is set for 2:30 p.m. July 21 in Lane County Circuit Court.
