The Mexican comedian, actor, producer and director, Eugenio Derbez, most known in the U.S. for the films "Instructions Not Included," "Overboard," and most recently "CODA" and "The Valet," will undergo surgery after an accident left him in a "delicate" state, his wife, Mexican actress and singer Alessandra Rosaldo, said to the press on Tuesday.

Eugenio Derbez, from left, Sian Heder, Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur, Emilia Jones, Daniel Durant and Amy Forsyth, winners of the award for best picture for "CODA," pose in the press room while signing "I love you" at the Oscars on March 27, 2022, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The three Oscar wins for the film "CODA" has provided an unprecedented feeling of affirmation to people in the Deaf community.

The injuries are non-life-threatening, she reassured fans.

“I want to inform you that a couple of days ago, Eugenio had an accident. He is fine, however, the injuries he suffered are delicate and in the next few hours he will have to undergo surgery," Rosaldo said.

Without mentioning details of the accident or the injuries, or where he is currently hospitalized, Rosaldo pointed out that because the operation is delicate and "complicated," the actor's recovery will be "long and difficult since he will have to rest for several weeks and then undergo rehabilitation therapies,” she said.

Rosaldo said she will have to fulfill several work commitments that she cannot cancel. However, she said, she will be focused on the recovery of her husband.

“Right now, the priority is to focus on this process so that Eugenio can get ahead, taking the time that is necessary to (get better)," she said.

Rosaldo promised fans she'd keep them informed of the actor's health via social media.

Derbez was born in Mexico City on Sept. 2, 1961. He is the son of Mexican actress Silvia Derbez and publicist Mario Eugenio González. He started his career as an extra, and later he was part of the animation team of the program "En Familia con Chabelo," a celebrated family game show that ran on Mexican television for almost 50 years until 2015.

He began to show his comedic talent in the program "Anabel," which led him to think up his own characters, as well as write, produce and star in his own shows: "Al Derecho y al Derbez", "Derbez en Donde" and "La Familia P.luche”, the latter showcasing a Mexican family and marking his great success in Mexican television.

Derbez's talent and creativity led him to produce programs such as “Hospital el Paisa” and “Vecinos” and “Ellas son la Alegría del Hogar" for Mexican television. He has done Spanish-language dubbing for the animated films “Shrek,” “Mulan” and “Dr. Dolittle."

Derbez's restlessness inspired him to diversify his career and pursue cinema without having to rely on comedy. He was in the bilingual drama film "La Misma Luna" or "Under the Same Moon," alongside Mexican actress Kate del Castillo — a film that narrated the journey of an unaccompanied minor as he made his way to the U.S. from Mexico to be reunited with his mother.

The great success and recognition on Mexican television were not enough for Derbez, who decided to leave Grupo Televisa, Mexico's largest mass media company, and make his way into Hollywood cinema.

He then participated in "Beverly Hills Chihuahua," Adam Sandler's "Jack & Jill" and the series “Rob," produced by Rob Schneider.

In 2013, he wrote, produced and starred in the film "Instructions Not Included," which was a major success. He also starred in the film “Overboard" and Amazon Prime's "The Valet."

Derbez was part of the main cast of the film "CODA," which received the Oscar for Best Picture in 2022.
