EUP Family Fun Day returns May 21

SAULT STE. MARIE — EUP Family Fun Day is returning on May 21 with special deals at several local attractions.

Family Fun Day is an annual event that is meant to give Sault residents the opportunity to experience vacation fun without leaving their hometown.

With such a large tourism industry, Sault Ste. Marie has plenty of historic and famous structures and activities for visitors to enjoy. EUP Family Fun Day will give local families the same chance to participate in sightseeing.

For a donation of any amount of money, Famous Soo Locks boat tours and Sault Historic Sites are opening their doors to anyone on Sunday, May 21. While there is normally a set price to take a tour of the Locks or visit any local historic sites, for one day there is no set price to enter.

"It allows people that normally don't get a chance to see tours or historical sites to see them at a reduced rate," said Scott LaBonte, general manager of Famous Soo Locks Boat Tours. "It allows locals to become tourists."

All proceeds gathered from donations will be supporting the Soo Locks Children's Museum, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating kids about the Locks and their importance.

The children's museum is a community-funded effort. The museum recently began demolition on the interior of the building to prepare for construction of the museum itself.

Locations that are participating in the day include Soo Locks Famous Boat Tours, the Tower of History, the River of History Museum and the Museum Ship Valley Camp.

"We're excited, it's always nice to see local people come out and have fun," said LaBonte. "A lot of people come out for the day and have fun alongside the tourists."

Visitors over the age of 16 who wish to donate must provide some proof that they are a resident of the EUP, such as a driver's license or a piece of mail with their address on it. Visitors who are not residents of the EUP can still attend but will have to pay the regular admission price.

There is no required amount to qualify for donations, but full families are suggested to leave donations of about $20.

Museum Ship Valley Camp is open 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; the Tower of History and River of History Museum are open noon-5 p.m. Located next to the Valley Camp, Famous Soo Locks Boat Tours will operate tours at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.
