Euphoria and Grey's Anatomy both love to dial up the drama, but ultimately, the shows are pretty different.

Fortunately, the differences are something Eric Dane is enjoying – and he hopes his fans are, too.

Eric, who plays Nate's father Cal Jacobs in Euphoria, has admitted he's enjoying playing a foil to his former Grey's character Dr Mark Sloan, saying that "as an actor, you want to be able to experience different characters".

"You know, I certainly don't want to offend any of the Grey's fans, but as an actor, you want to be able to experience different characters," Eric told Entertainment Weekly.

"And I hope they come on the journey with me."

Full of praise for his Euphoria co-stars, he added: "I'm playing with extraordinary young actors and amazing material on a fearless network... I've been tickled with all this great material I've gotten this year."

As for how he's feeling about Euphoria's second season, Eric said that he was "happy" to be exploring Cal's backstory – a far cry from Dr Sloan's career as a plastic surgeon.

"I did want to get into Cal's backstory," he said. "I knew that was eventually gonna come. I'm happy it came this season."

Clearly enjoying his post-Grey's direction, Eric added: "I've been very happy with the material that I've been given and I love this character."

Despite Cal's dark past, Dane went on to say that he both "loves" and "knows" his character well. "[Euphoria] just seemed like such a good fit for me... I feel like I know this character, even though I may not exist in the same set of circumstances in the real world."

Euphoria airs Sunday nights on HBO and Monday nights on NOW and Sky Atlantic in the UK.
