"Euphoria" star Hunter Schafer to host Indiana University speaker series

HBO star and LGBTQ+ rights activist Hunter Schafer is coming to Indiana University Auditorium. The “Euphoria” star is set to host the IU LGBTQ+ Culture Center’s “Speaking of Excellence” speaker series on Feb. 29. The event is free to IU students, and open to the public.

Who is Hunter Schafer?

Schafer is an actress, model, and LGBTQ+ rights activist who rose to national prominence for her portrayal of Jules Vaugn on the HBO hit series “Euphoria.” The show has been praised for its realistic portrayals of topics like addiction and sexuality within Gen Z.

Schafer most recently portrayed the character Tigris in the 2023 “Hunger Games” prequel, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” and is set to star in the upcoming horror film “Cuckoo.”

Prior to stardom, Schafer also made history as the youngest plaintiff listed on the ACLU’s lawsuit against North Carolina’s HB2, which barred trans people from using the bathroom that corresponded with their gender identity. Schafer was a junior in high school at the time of the lawsuit’s filing, which led to the law being repealed.

Is the event open to the general public?

Yes. IU students can receive one free ticket, and tickets are available for purchase to the general public for $25. Tickets are $15 for IU faculty and staff. Tickets can be purchased on the IU Auditorium website through Ticketmaster.

When is the event?

The event will be hosted at 7 p.m. on Feb. 29 at the IU Auditorium.

What is the “Speaking of Excellence” speaker series?

The series, hosted by the Indiana Memorial Union Board in collaboration with the IU LGBTQ+ Culture Center brings notable LGBTQ+ activists and media personalities to IU. The series previously hosted longtime actor and activist George Takei, who portrated Hikaru Sulu in the original “Star Trek” franchise.
