Pope Francis doubts the effectiveness of Europe's actions in ensuring peace in Ukraine and around the world, saying that Western countries are not exploring "creative ways" to end conflicts, Vatican News reported on Aug. 2.

"Where are you sailing if you are not showing the world paths of peace, creative ways for bringing an end to the war in Ukraine and to the many conflicts causing so much bloodshed," said the Pontiff during his apostolic trip to Portugal.

He also condemned the increase in investments in arms production, emphasizing that it leads to "the depletion of authentic human capital, such as education, healthcare, and the welfare state."

Earlier, Pope Francis denounced Russia's withdrawal from the Black Sea Grain Initiative and repeated air strikes on Ukrainian port infrastructure.
