With Eurovision canceled, Netflix offers fans a Will Ferrell comedy

With this year's Eurovision Song Contest now canceled, Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams are hoping fans can get their fix by watching their new comedy instead.

Ferrell: "When we talked with the Eurovision people, you know, they, they totally got it. I said, you know, we're going to have some fun with it. And they're like, oh, you should...But at the same time, we wanted to show our love and gratitude for this kind of amazing, amazing contest that, you know, that 46 countries compete in every year."

In the Netflix film,"Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga," Ferrell and McAdams play a duo from Iceland who compete in one of the world's biggest television events, and find unlikely ways to keep advancing.

McAdams said making the film was as fun as it looks.

"Sometimes when they look fun, they weren't actually fun. But this one hopefully looks fun and was really fun."

Pierce Brosnan - who plays Ferrell's father and harshest critic - said he only needed a quick look at the script to sign on.

"My agent just sent me the script. I read it one morning and said yes to it by lunchtime...I grew up with Eurovision living in London. Very, very familiar with it. And saw ABBA, you know, perform and win the contest way back in 1974."

Ferrell said real past Eurovision performances were a key inspiration and gave them the idea for scenes - including this one.

Eurovision was due to take place in Rotterdam in May this year after the Netherlands won the 2019 contest.
