Eva Rinker wins High School Heisman Scholarship

Nov. 4—Tuscola senior Eva Rinker is a 2022 Heisman High School Scholarship winner, announced by the Heisman Trophy Trust on Nov. 2.

The Heisman Trophy Trust awards the $1,000 scholarship to outstanding high school seniors across the country.

"It was a very strenuous scholarship to fill out," Rinker said.

Rinker was chosen from an applicant pool of thousands of high school scholar-athletes graduating with the class of 2023. In total, more than 5,700 have been named school winners.

Among the qualifications are a grade point average of 3.0 or better, participation in at least one of the sports recognized by the International Olympic Committee and school leadership.

Rinker has played multiple sports for the Mountaineers but has set her focus on cross county and track. She finished 7th at the 3A West Regional meet and will compete for a state title this Saturday.

Rinker also signed to continue her education and athletic career at West Virginia University Wednesday, among nearly 50 other Division I, II and II offers.

It's no wonder WVU came calling. In addition to her athletic achievements, Rinker holds a 4.3 GPA.

She plans to major in exercise physiology and double-minoring in Spanish and math. Why Spanish?

"It's a good thing to have in the medical field," she said. "You get a lot more job opportunities [knowing Spanish]."

Rinker will compete for the chance to become a state winner, national finalist or national winner.

State winners receive a $1,000 college scholarship, national finalists receive a $2,000 college scholarship and the male and female national winners will each receive a $10,000 college scholarship.
