NEW PHILADELPHIA ‒ A new clinic has joined the local healthcare community to help women who are pregnant or suspect they might be.

Eva Women’s Clinic, which has locations in Canton and Akron, opened a third site at 152 N. Broadway on Jan. 9.

The clinic offers free pregnancy tests, ultrasound and, once pregnancy has been confirmed, sexually transmitted disease testing and treatment. The clinic can give prenatal vitamins. It does not provide birth control or abortion referrals or services.

"We're here to determine that they're pregnant," said Candi Durbin, medical services director. After that, the four-person staff can refer them to community resources, help get them into an obstetrician's office or get insurance.

"A lot of the gals, they've kind of panicked because most of the time it's an unexpected pregnancy and they don't have insurance or they don't have a plan," Durbin said. "We are here to give them, basically, information, help and hope. The idea is that the girl who is (in) early pregnancy, we can get her into care."

Durbin said clinic opened in New Philadelphia to meet a need in the area.

"There's nothing around here like it," she said. "We had several clients that come from Coshocton or down here, Tusc. County, Carroll County. When we looked at the map of where anything like us was, there was a big hole. New Philly was right in the center of the hole, so it is a perfect location."

Eva is nonprofit funded through churches, individuals, grants and foundations, Durbin said. She invited local entities, such as churches, who may have something to offer patients, to contact the clinic.

"We're always looking for more people to refer to, and partner with, just to make sure that we get a strong community connection," Durbin said.

Health department services

Other local resources include the Tuscarawas County Health Department's reproductive health services. It can help plan a healthy pregnancy, provide birth control options, screen for diseases and other health conditions, and test for sexually transmitted disease.

At the health department, priority is to be given to persons having low incomes and those with no insurance or insurance that does not cover reproductive health services. Fees for services are based on family size and income and no one is to be denied services if they cannot pay. There is no requirement that a person live in the area in order to receive services."We do not provide direct pregnancy care," said county health department spokeswoman Jennifer Demuth. "A person would need to see an OB/GYN for those services."

Its services are funded through Title X of the federal Public Health Service Act, Maternal and Child Health Block Grant and general revenue funds. The department accepts most insurance, Medicaid, Medicaid health maintenance organizations and Medicare.
