Evangel University announced this week that local military service members will have free admission to all Valor Athletics sporting events during the 2023-24 year.

To participate, any military veteran or active duty service members just has to present a valid ID at the entrance of the event.

“As the son of a former Marine who fought in Korea, I have always had strong respect for those who serve in the military,” said Dennis McDonald, director of athletics, in a news release. “Offering free admission is a small token of our appreciation for their service.”

The university the discount is part of a larger effort to honor past and present service members.

In April, the university held its inaugural Veteran Valor Day, an annual recognition of military service members, which included a special chapel service and a free luncheon.

Evangel has foundational ties to the military, as its campus was built on the grounds of the O’Reilly General Hospital, a facility built during World War II to treat wounded soldiers. The university is also home to the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, one of the largest producers of military chaplains in the nation.

In addition, the Admiral Vern Clark Veteran’s Center at Evangel connects veterans with the university’s academic offerings and student support services.

“We hope that local service members will take advantage of this offer. Our athletic events are top notch,” said McDonald, in the release. “Spectators will see some really competitive play from all of our student-athletes here at Evangel, especially as we compete in our first season in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.”
