Evanston COVID-19 Death Toll Passes 50, 114 Active Cases Remain

EVANSTON, IL — More than 50 Evanston residents had died of complications of the new coronavirus as of Monday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

There have been 728 confirmed COVID-19 cases among Evanston residents, according to the city's health department. Nearly 78 percent of them had recovered by Tuesday.

The city's coronavirus testing data for May shows an average of nearly 90 specimens a day were processed by labs, with an average of 12.3 residents testing positive each day.

For the first time, the Evanston Health and Human Services Department this week began reporting the number of residents who have recovered after contracting COVID-19.

As of Tuesday, 567 residents had recovered from the virus, with 114 cases remaining active, according to data provided by the city.

Evanston's health department counts people as recovered when they are out of the hospital and not in isolation, Ike Ogbo, the city's health director, told Evanston Patch on May 6 in response to a request for recovery data.

The Skokie Health Department has been reporting the number of recovered residents for more than a month. It was not immediately clear what definition the village uses to determine if a person has recovered, but any explanation provided by village officials will be added here.

The Illinois Department of Public Health reports the statewide recovery rate is 92 percent. The agency defines anyone who is still alive 42 days after testing positive as a recovered case, according to its website.

IDPH also breaks down the number of cases by ZIP code. As of Tuesday, there had been 301 confirmed cases in the 60201 ZIP code on the north side of Evanston and 412 in south Evanston's 60202.

Last week, Evanston Mayor Steve Hagerty favorably compared the city's response to its neighbors to the west and south. Per every 10,000 residents, Chicago has 156 confirmed cases, Skokie has 125 confirmed cases and Evanston has 90 confirmed cases, according to Hagerty.

Skokie had confirmed 845 coronavirus cases and 28 COVID-19-related deaths as of Tuesday, with 123 residents still classified as ill, according to the village website.

No Evanston residents under the age of 40 have died. One person in their 40s died, two people in their 50s, three people in their 60s and 12 people in their 70s. Nearly two thirds of the city's deaths, 33, were among those aged 80 or above, according to the medical examiner's office.

As for those who live north of Lake Cook Road, Illinois Department of Public Health officials have refused to identify the ages, sex, date of death and hometowns of Lake County residents whose deaths have been classified as COVID-19-related in response to a request under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act.

Lisa Reynolds, an acting FOIA officer for the agency, claimed health privacy laws prevent the release of the information — despite the fact such data has been released on a daily basis by Cook County officials.
