CenterPoint: Impacted customers should prepare for power to be out overnight

EVANSVILLE — Storms continue into the evening across the Tri-State area, as power outages continue to fluctuate with new rounds of rain and wind.

CenterPoint is estimating over 10,000 customers without power as of 9:45 p.m. Thursday as strong winds and hail strafed the Evansville area.

Southwestern Vanderburgh County was put under a severe thunderstorm warning until 10 a.m. According to the National Weather Service, a severe thunderstorm was located about nine miles east of Mount Vernon, moving south at 45 miles per hour.

The hazards included 70 mph winds and ping pong ball-sized hail, indicated by radar. The number of residents without power kept jumping as the storm marched through, according to CenterPoint's outage map.

Police responded to multiple downed limbs and power lines, as well as a report of a tree that had fallen on a house.

9:45 p.m. - CenterPoint 'assessments' continue

CenterPoint energy sent a news release Thursday evening stating "assessments of CenterPoint Energy’s electric system are ongoing."

The work will continue overnight to restore power, as well as fix damaged polls and downed wires.

"However, due to expected high winds throughout the night, the outage count is likely to fluctuate," the release stated.

The release states remaining impacted customers should plan to be without power overnight.

“We will continue our system damage assessments overnight, and we ask our customers for patience as restoration estimates may fluctuate due to severe weather impacting the area throughout the night,” said Richard Leger, Senior Vice President, Indiana Electric at CenterPoint Energy.

9:20 p.m. - Verizon services begins to return

Verizon customers who had been dealing with an outage since early afternoon began to see service return.

The issue was caused by cut fiber lines, according to a Verizon spokesperson.

8:45 p.m. - Video update from National Weather Service

8:30 p.m. - Local radar reported down, Newburgh under thunderstorm warning

The National Weather Service Paducah reported around 8:30 p.m. Thursday that the radar for Evansville and Fort Campbell were down.

"Use Paducah, Indianapolis, and Louisville if you are using an app with a specific radar," NWS tweeted.

7:50 p.m. - New severe thunderstorm warning

Vanderburgh County was issued a severe thunderstorm warning until 8:45 p.m.

Vanderburgh County was issued a severe thunderstorm warning until 3:45 p.m.

The National Weather Service reported at 2:48 p.m. severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from six miles Southeast of Washington to Princeton to six miles Northeast of Grayville, moving Southeast at 55 mph.

2:20 p.m. - Wireless service reported down

Verizon users were reporting issues with their service.

Emergency management posted a Facebook post stating they would have more information on the issues when their cellphones work again.

Spectrum service has also had reported outages.

Vanderburgh County is a part of severe thunderstorm watch in place until 7 p.m.

12:15 p.m. - Vann Avenue reopens

Vann Avenue reopens following closure due to gas leak.

12 p.m. - City pools, golf courses closed

The parks department announced all golf courses and pools will be closed Thursday due to severe weather.

11 a.m. - City pools on delay, Burdette to remain closed

The Evansville Department of Parks and Recreation announced pools would open on a delay Thursday afternoon.

Weather permitting, Rochelle, Mosby, and Lorraine will open at 1 p.m.

Burdette Aquatic Center will remain closed Thursday due to storm debris and the threat of lightning. The center will reopen at 10 a.m. Friday.

10:50 a.m. - Gas leak on Vann Avenue

Vann Avenue between the Lloyd Expressway and Lincoln Avenue is closed due to a gas leak.

The Evansville Fire Department asked people to avoid the area.

10:45 a.m. - New severe thunderstorm warning

Vanderburgh County was placed under a new severe thunderstorm warning until 11:30 a.m.

  • Northeastern Union County in Northwestern Kentucky

10:30 a.m. - EVPL branch closes early

Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library will close its East Branch for the rest of the day Thursday due to a power outage.

10:15 a.m. - EMA releases wind gust measurement

The Vanderburgh County Emergency Management Agency released a mapping of wind speed in Evansville.

At 9:10 a.m. the EMA office recorded a 48.6 mph wind gust.

EMA has also urged drivers to pay attention while driving as public safety workers are out on roadways clearing debris. Trees and wires have been reported across roadways.

Rain recorded

EMA posted via Facebook they had recorded over an inch of rain at the EMA WeatherStation between 9 and 10 a.m.
