Even though driver’s license is on your phone, you still need to carry physical licenses, DDS says

Officials with DDS said if a Georgian is stopped by law enforcement they are still required to show their physical driver’s license. DDS told Channel 2 Action News law enforcement officials are not currently accepting digital driver’s licenses.

“With the busy holiday weekend upon us, please continue to carry the hard copy of your Georgia driver’s license or ID. It will be necessary to provide a physical card when interacting with Law Enforcement. While we are delighted with the popularity of Georgia’s Digital credentials, please be patient as we move through this pilot with TSA, and remember to always carry your physical Georgia driver’s license with you,” said DDS Commissioner Spencer R. Moore.

The digital driver’s license is offered to Georgia residents the option to add a valid, Georgia-issued driver’s license and ID to their iPhone and Apple Watch.

This allows Georgians to use their digital license and ID at select TSA security checkpoints, including some at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport.

Arizona, Maryland, and Colorado are the three other states that had previously introduced digital state ID options.

Officials said that it could take up to 48 hours for Georgia to appear as an option in Apple Wallet.
